Ok, clear ;)
I'll continue prototyping.

The same kind of base now built on a canvas.
It is a very small piece but it gives an idea how flexible it is:

I will have to test on a larger canvas, but it looks like a good way to build a mat :)

Thank you so much, this is fascinating - I wonder if it would be worth it to do... a grassland or savannah.

That looks very good, I would never of thought of using the pumice in this way though now you've done it it makes sense that it will flex well. It looks more robust than the desert mat I bought from Terrain Mat (which tended to shed 'powder' when it was unrolled.

One question worth bearing in mind while prototyping might be how well the mat will stay still on a gaming table. Ultimately I abandoned my Terrain Mat because it was a bit too mobile for my tastes.

That question is one of the reasons why my next step is testing with a 60x60cm canvas ;)
The other reason is because I have to check if the wave-pattern is not "too-much" on a larger surface.

Now a 60x60cm prototype:

The color is not solid enough. I've not used enough white pumice and the canvas is not well covered, causing it to soak the paint :(
Lessons learned => use enough pumice to have a solid layer (about 300ml per 60x60cm square).

I've not used a full waved pattern because that was somehow ugly ;)

The mat is very flexible, the pumice does not get off, and while not soft, the surface is not coarse.

Applying the same method with a more solid pumice layer on a 180x120cm canvas and sealing the paint with PVA should  made a fine mat :)

Very interested in that producition methode Vincent !!

If that actually sticks to a 180x120 it will be a great expansion on "plaincloth"  tables !!

I actually LIKE that colourspread on that piece !! It feels very much desert !!  When in Egypte you will see the lighter sand (which is also whiter mostly) gater in holes or against ridges, so for me you result gives a very natural feel !!

Very impressive, I agree with the decision to minimize the wavy lines, this 'random' patterm looks very nice indeed.

1st dune test:

Textured with white pumice that should be fine.
It is made out of Fimo.
