Recasts...
« on: May 04, 2017, 07:58:08 PM »
Howdy everyone,
First off, if this is not welcome, feel free to delete as I dont want to get anyones heckles up.

Secondly on to the topic.
So Ive seen (here) and on other sites that people have bought recasts of ships of battlefleet gothic and I am quite tempted to do so to A. save some money and B. so that I am more willing to convert them.
Now the questions are, is it worth it?
Is it too fround upon?
Are they easy to work with from past experience?

I hope some poeple are willing to answer and share some tips...

I may be in the minority here, but I have no problem buying or using recasts for OOP models. It's already expensive enough to get involved in so-called "dead" games without a huge monetary barrier for entry. I wouldn't go around advertising that your models are recasts though, for obvious reasons.

That said, eventually here BFG will be re-booted by GW, and if the scale/art-style doesn't change too dramatically from what we've got now, there may be better opportunities for purchasing in the future rather than relying on recasts/3rd-parties (which are still pretty expensive).

I must admit i dont hol dhigh hopes for the reboot. I think it will be like the dreadfleet boxed game and have a few ships, be a one off thing and with a drastic change style. Although I do hope I am wrong, only time will tell haha.

Its good to hear that I would not be steering too far wrong with purchasing recasts for dead games, if GW still made them, Id have no problem buying from them and ebay sellers tend to get greedy (which I suppose is their right too)

My display fleet is all originals but the fleet I game with is all made of Recasts. Same with the chaps I play. It's not like we can go and buy new models anywhere so we are forced to go the recast route. If GW brought back the BFG range I'd just remortgage my house. :D

I mainly do the recasting myself. It's not great but it will do for gaming pieces. I have ordered 3 Battleships off AliExpress before and they are pretty hit and miss. Some parts are fantastic and some parts are rubbish. I only got a reply to my complaint when I threatened to leave a bad review so the customer service is also a bit hit and miss. I did build my Dreadnought out of them though so it's not like they are unusable. Just not if you are OCD on quality.

Having said that, I bought some Marine Novas off ebay that came from AliExpress and you can't tell the difference between them and original FW ones.

As for "is it worth it". It really depends on what you are trying to cast up. Silicone and Resin aren't cheap and the postage is expensive as well so you have to be quite committed to doing it. If you haven't done it before it can be quite hard making the moulds and getting the resin mix right. I've had it a few times where I haven't mixed the resin correctly and just had to ditch the cast. The same goes with the Silicone actually - but that was only once!

I'd also limit yourself to only doing simple models as well. One or two parts at most. I mainly just cast up escorts as cruisers tend to require a LOT of resin and the detail is very hard to capture if you don't have access to a vacuum chamber.

That post was a lot longer than I meant it to be....  :o If you want tips on how cast stuff up yourself, just ask. Otherwise, go for AliExpress.

To be fair, I had similar complaints about some of the old metal ships.

These are so much easier to put onto bases...

Barring what come with the new reboot, whenever that is, I have absolutely no qualms with collecting/facing recasts.  Probably cheaper than 3D print, and certainly cheaper than the official stuff.

Either GW takes our money, or we'll give it to someone else.

I did try making a mould myself and although it has gone well i never dared to try and make the resin (which i have) for it. I managed to get some for free from my previous job when we were clearing out old stock.
I may have to try it when I get back but I am also going to grab a few from a certain site, including a set of epic warhound titans as i have wanted them for many a year now.

Its a bit of a gamble but willing to give it a try and im sure there will be a few musings oin here and the vlog/blog....

When you do mix the resin make sure you do it in a well ventilated room. I'm also suggest disposable gloves as things can get a bit messy when pouring.

If you're using a two part resin, make sure you get the quantities right using some decent scales and preferably pour them into two separate containers (so no mistakes when measuring out the mix) before mixing them.

Do you have fast setting resin? The one I use is usually ready to de-mould after about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the parts that is.

It is a fast setting resin so about the same time as yours.
I suppose its the worry about getting measurements wrong that I always got nervous but will bite the bullet when back, Ive tried so many new things here that I may as well give it a go, atleast i cant ruin the model i moulded haha...

Thanks for the tips matey :)

All you need is a pressure pot and a compressor to get high quality cast models, send me a tell if you need any help i'm more then happy to help. Also a paint pot from ebay costs about $100 plus $20 for conversion pieces, then you need a compressor and your good to start making pressure molds and cast parts for personal use. I eye all my mixes, my resin is a 50/50 mix resin is pretty cheap so don't stress on miscasts. If you get a sweaty looking part thats shiney typically you didnt mix the resin enough. use mold release in your molds let it dry for a couple minutes then put a dusting of johnson and johnsons baby powder behind that and get it rubberbanded up and then its good for pouring resin.

Sadly, atm Alibaba is going after recasters harder than it is after drug dealers.  20lbs of pure coke?  OK!  a Desolator?  You must be joking.
