Just ran into this little tidbit posted by Laurie Goulding (editor at Black Library and one of the driving forces behind the Horus Heresy novels/FW books/etc):

Battlefleet Gothic shouldn't be used as a benchmark for Warhammer 40,000 or Horus Heresy ships - the battle fleet featured in it is merely the one from the war in the Gothic Sector in 142.M41 (i.e. the 12th Black Crusade). Imperial forces were completely cut off from reinforcements for over a decade, IIRC.

It's like taking a snapshot of the British Navy fleet in 1864 and then using it as official intelligence for your modern day invasion of Plymouth...  :D

I'm kind of curious what this might mean for all us BFG fans out there...

Not only that, but more that the types of ships and variations of them are a lot crazier than we've assumed.

Pffft. He forgot to mention Armada with ships from various sectors. He forgot the large campaign gw once did. He forgets the FFG rogue trader RPG.
Basically all things with ships known from the Gothic sector flying through the whole universe.

He is simply justifying black library free writing...

If they'll end up giving BFG (or space ship warfare in the 40k universe) the same kinda love they've been giving the Horus Heresy (especially the FW books) I'm all up for it!

I agree with Horizon's statement. Besides, losing contact for 10 years in Imperium terms is more like a weird glitch in the comms relay and I really doubt much would have changed. The Tyrant class cruiser was already nearly 2,000 years old by 142.M41.

But would that be such a bad thing? Of course it depends on how it's done, but it is a bit liberating to see that we might get a bit of playing room when it comes to 40k/30k ships and how they function.

Hate to be salty, but it sounds like more GW retconning to me. How many times have we seen inconvenient stuff butchered or straight up removed?

The great part about 40k is the near limitless canvas. Anything you don't like can be seen as Imperial propaganda. Long live head-canon! :)
