[WM] Dogs of War and Empire
« on: March 03, 2016, 09:54:42 AM »
Encouraged by Janners and EmpireAddict to actually get an army put together and painted by the end of April for the TriWiz doubles.

Being a doubles tournament I thought that it needed mercenaries, and only the best* will do!

Here is my tentative start to my Dogs of War army. For most of the units I'm trying to find something that with a little bit of squinting looks a little like the 28mm counterparts when they first arrived on the scene.

So my 'Alicante Fellowship' - using Pendraken Macedonian Pikeman.

'Braganza's Besiegers' - GW Empire crossbowmen (supplied by EmpireAddict) with the helmets and painting jerkins as if they were armour with some scratchbuilt pavaises.

Note: Bases aren't fully finished cos I'll do all of that after varnish. And the slight frosting on the pavaise edges has been noticed and will be eliminated.

what a great idea...  as DoW was my mostly played army of my late Warhammer stage, I was long time thinking about converting one in Warmaster scale... I was decidet to sculp some models to look as close the 28mm originals as possible, but have never gotten far enough...
This is really inpiring!!

Great stuff. I really like the Briganza's Besiegers- one of my favourite Warhammer units.

Really like the Pendraken Macedonian Pikeman. Might need some of those for a WM historical army (after I do all the other first) . Just been reading the Osprey reg. Alex The G too earlier today. Thanks for sharing

Very nice.  Great to see the project going forward.

I guess the Pendraken minis are slightly bigger than the GW ones right?

I don't see a noticeable difference in the scale between the two for the infantry. GW do appear to have slightly thicker integral bases though.

GW cavalry is far larger than the Pendraken though.

Good to know regarding the Pendraken and GW infantry minis are similar - I guess a thicker (say 2 mm high MDF, or 2 x 1 mm plastic) base for the Pendraken will help them match up to GW (on the standard 1 mm high plastic bases).

Shame about the cav but good to know. Would you be able to post a comparison shot between the 2 if possible please?

Thanks for the heads up.

GW stuff does vary in size between armies.  The GW Empire Knights are very big and highly detailed compared with say, the Dark Elf Dark Riders which are pretty basic and noticably smaller.

A bit of an update from me.

I've got my sort-of Borgio the Besieger done.

My nearly-if-you-squint enough Ricco's Republican Guard.

And if you look at them a little cross-eyed, Voland's Venators.

What other units do you have planned please Rowlybot? There's 20 to choose from, so that should give you a decent sized army when you're finished:

Golgfag’s Ogres
Kreugar’s Cursed Company
Long Drong’s Slayers
Beorg Bearstruck and the Bearmen of Urslo
Lumpin Croop’s Fighting Cocks
Tichi Huichi’s Raiders
Oglah Khan’s Wolfboys
Birdmen of Catrazza
The Giants of Albion and Hengus the Druid
Bronzino’s Galloper Guns
The Alcatani Fellowship
Pirazzo’s Lost Legion
Leopold’s Leopard Company
Ricco’s Republican Guard
Marksmen of Miragliano
Braganza’s Beseigers
Vespero’s Vendetta
Voland’s Venators
Al Muktar’s Desert Dogs
Asarnil the Dragonlord

Cheers chaps!

I've just based my Pirazzo's Lost Legion, 3rd pikemen unit. Haven't sorted a crossbow unit for that theme yet. I've got some ottoman-Turk Akjini(sp?) for some Al-Muktars Desert Dogs. So I've covered some and lots more to do. I have enough ogres for one unit so they'd be a sort of Golfangs too.

How do you plan on making Pirazzo's Lost Legion identifiable? Having crossbows in the front rank, or will the crossbow unit you talk of just sit in front of the pikemen?

I really like your Borgio idea. All of your units will be interesting to see.
