(BFG) Fleets out of the Printer
« on: December 31, 2015, 02:11:00 PM »
Hi guys!

I wanted to show you a few shots of my little BFG 3d printing project. I started with BFG this year. With no experience in BFG at all and the fact that the game was discontinued in the meantime I thought it would be fun to recreate and print everything I needed. Due to the lack of time everything took a little bit longer than expected. During the holidays I managed to paint a few ships. So finally the first 1000 points of IN and Chaos are game ready.

I guess the next step will be some big ships to reach the 1500 points. Battleships would be nice but somehow I find grand cruisers a little bit more interesting. So maybe one Repulsive class for chaos and one Vengeance class grand cruiser for the imperials.

With a ittle edit, the pictures seem to work now.:)

That's great- where'd you get the designs to print?

Hard to tell from the pictures that they're printed.

Where did you have them printed? Are those Shapeways' prints?

Thanks guys.

I didn't use any external print files or services. I built the 3d models in Blender mainly referring to pictures of actual models I found on the net. I made a few changes to match the ships more with their artworks in the fleet lists, like slightly altered proportions, the different prows of the imperial ship classes and so on.

The ships are printed at home. I know that I could get higher quality prints using print services. But I mainly wanted to know what I can do and how far I can go with my home 3d printer. Part of this little project was to be completely independent from any source (GW or eBay, hint). So the only thing I bought was a BFG rulebook at an online bookstore in England.

Funny thing. For the first two cruisers I used original GW flying stands that I had in my spare part box. Guess what. It didn't take long before the first broke off. So I finally switched to printed flying stands with metal pegs. No more broken stands for me. :D

Reason I'm asking where you got it printed was more to know the quality. From the pics and the paint the models look rather decent, since you can't see the print lines and/or grainy structure that much.
