Pike and phalanx
« on: September 21, 2009, 09:32:21 AM »
Hi,

I have notice in the warmaster medieval armies, that exist two special features: Pike and Phalanx.

For example in Burgundian Ordennance of Charles the Bold army the Pikemen has special of Combined arms and Pike. By the other hand, in the Swiss Confederation army the Landwehr Pikemen has the special of phalanx.

I am not able to find the description of special PIKES, through warmastar ancient, warmaster ancient armies or warmaster medieval armies.

Does the special feature of PIKES work the same way as PHALANX?

Phalanx could be base in short frontal (and use some phalanx rules) but also there is the posibility of base it in long frontal (so then use other rules for phalanx).

My question:

have you mixed in a game the two "types" of phalanx? Did it work well? or it is better that all the phalanx had been based regular?

I have based all my pikes "short" only. I've never seen "long" based pikes in play.

I've started basing spearmen clumps on 60X40mm bases facing the long side.  Looks nice, though it will lead to problems when I take losses.

Use rare-earth magnets for two identifiable chaps on the stand and remove when appropriate.....

Nice idea, Lex.

I'll get some pictures up sometime this weekend -- the paintjob is of the "if you don't like it, arms length, still don't like it, squint" variety, but the basing may give some ideas.

I love Litko 3mm bases.

Got kind of inspired... Planning to finish painting just enough detail to get these stands to an acceptable wargame standard -- probably including staining the base, then drybrushing.

As you'll note, I did a lot of Elf cavalry snipping, which won't look all that great on close examination -- elves cavalry strips are failry 'sociable.'

These Pendraken (?) Undead Cav look a good deal better (of course it helps that they are painted).

All in all, I like the effect of using 60x40 bases to represent Warmaster unit, though I'm not sure how much of a nuisance it will be in play.   The cavalry looks like cavalry, and it's possible to get nice squares of infantry.  I suppose, worst come to worst, these bases will end up being used for Impetus/Impetus fantasy.

And this is a unit of Carrion that will give me much less problems ranking up and regluing!

Wow Carrington! that is quite unusual! and looks great, when your miniatures hits a battletable post your experience with this base system.

For me, changing the size of the bases is a major change in the rules, and I am quite old-fashion to dare to do it with my miniatures, but the look of the army is different with your basing way and will be a pleasure to read other aspects of the game bring with a new base system.

I like the dioram base made with: commander+spearmen+archers! :D cool

Thanks, I'm glad you like them.
I'm fairly confident that the cavalry basing won't be too much of a problem -- I tend to think the 40x60 formation is a no brainer... and worst come to worst I can replace with single stands when losses are taken.  The infantry is more of a potential problem, you're right... although I'm thinking I'd use it at as Dogs of War Pikes -- again, the formation's kind of a no-brainer.  And it does minimize wear and tear on elven spears. \

Then there is always the possibility I'll use them for Impetus -- coincidentally, 10mm recommended base size is 60x40.

switchning to 40x60 bases really, really won't work. The game is designed around individual unit elements, for example when units are pushed into other units through drivebacks, etc... It is individual stands that have to make way, not entre units. Likewise with general movement, it is individual stands that move, not units. And of course don't even get me started on what happens after the first round of pretty much any given combat....

Looks nice-ish (not actually to my liking, except perhaps as part of a diorama), but totally impractical for use in a game of Warmaster without fundementally altering the rules to the extent that you are no longer playing the same game anymore...

Are you sure on that -- my impression is that making way is done by units?
