Some WIP dwarf warrior test strips. Will see how the shields look in the morning!

Wow, great work on those shields. I hope you can keep the motivation up while doing that.

wow that is a serious painting.

Is the crow on the yellow banner in the back row a transfer? If not great free hand.

Hi all,

The shields and banner are not freehanded. I've been working on some shield transfers / waterslide decals for the dwarf warrior shields because I didn't want them all just half one colour, half another or something extra simple.

I wanted the effect for some units (although some will be uniform) of Viking / Saxon warbands with individual shield designs.

Some of the designs I have drawn onto paper and scanned in (about 2p piece size is fine, and you can draw round them to get the shield shape!) and some are just captured from simple google image searches such as "viking shield design" or "Saxon Shield", "Dwarf designs" etc. It just takes a bit of photoshop or similar knowledge to get them all shrunk down to the right size.

I'll get all the designs onto decal paper soon but believe it or not these I just printed onto envelope label stickers to test the size was right! So all these are just carefully cut out with a pair of small nail scissors and stuck right onto the shields! I've found it best to add a little nuln oil wash into the edges to even them up.

The flag will be better with a proper decal because if you look properly at the flag you can see the edges of the sticker. Still takes a bit of brush work to blend it in.

I posted these elsewhere but for the sake of completeness on this thread. These were the first Warmaster unit I ever painted a few weeks back. Some dwarf thunderers.

Really like those.  Very ambitious with the shields, but also great to go for individual colours for the warriors.  Look forward to seeing more.

If you can track down a 1/8" hole punch that's exactly the size you need for yhe dwarf shields. They'll fit in there very snuggly.

Great theme and painting.

The transfers work perfectly, good point.

The banner sticker is only notice if you carefull search for the edge or you already know it. In a game no one will see it.

Awesome stuff. The idea of attaching shield transfers to hundreds of dwarf warriors would fill me with dread!
Looks great though!!!!

Nice job.

One bad point : i think the colour of the guys and most important the aspect of the handgunners's flag is really modern. Looks like an american flag of the 18-19th. Makes the aspect very strange while the painting job is really nice.

Could you tell me where did you find viking transfer of this size ?! The viking raven banner one is really nice :)

Exactly :-)  At first glance, I thought it's some American Civil War Confederate zouaves :-)

However, the warriors are amazing, especially the shields. Excellent!
