Legion special rule query
« on: March 26, 2015, 10:19:55 AM »
Dear warmaster community,

My opponent and I play Gauls vs imperial Romans, and we are not sure that we are playing the legion rule correctly.

The legion rule states that a unit of legionaries counts each stand as supported in the first round of combat, whether it is supported or not. Other support modifiers are cumulative.

So, at first we played this rule that a legionary unit always counts +1 support per stand, regardless of supporting stands from other units, in the first round.

But now I think we should be counting +1 support for each stand of legionaries, and also add support for any stands supporting them from another unit.

Example

Leg Leg Leg
Aux Aux

Three legionary stands are supported by two auxiliary stands. Assuming no other modifiers apply, how much support does the roman side count in the first round of combat?

Is it 3, (one per legionary stand)?
Or is it 5 , (one per legionary stand and two per auxiliary stand) ?

Many thanks

Iain

the rules states that a Legion-stand which FIGHTS in combat counts as being supported for Combat Resolution (CR). That being an army specific special rule, means that unlesss it clearly states that the rules negates the generic rule they both apply.

Thus support would come in at 5+ in CR

Yep, both applies.

In your example 5 support.

Brilliant, many thanks for the quick response. Legionaries are indeed a force to be reckoned with...

Ya, that rule seems pretty nuts. Especially if you're counting support before casualties.

Well considering that I can have two barbarian infantry units with ten points to spare to one legion infantry unit I'm quite happy to play the barbarian side (Ancient Britons in my case so I guess the chariots help out). Also, remember that in WMA you only fight two rounds of combat so there's plenty of opportunity to reinforce a combat which should favour the side with more units if they can bring them to bear.

Legion is pretty tough, but if barbarians fights hard and win first round, Warband special is also dreadful!

It's also dreadful if you loose and start to retreat, only a matter of perspective. :P
