[BFG] Karun's log : painting spaceships (from Firestorm Armada)
« on: January 08, 2015, 10:33:43 AM »
Hi all :)

I'm not a BFG player and for now I only painted Sorylians for Firestorm Armada.
I detailed all my painting steps on the Spartan forum, and I supposed you could be interested to read that for the painting tips, even if it's not for Battlefleet. ;)
I'ts also a way to have something to participate to this forum, as I'm thankfull for the Gothicomp.

Here are more pics of my Swordbreaker class Battleship

My whole method :

I begin with the yellow
- The yellow is a base of Tausept ocre, and I paint some sunburst yellow after to make it... more bright yellow
- I work some shades with dilued washes of Snakebite leather, a quite tricky step
- then I put some color variations in the plates doing some mixes on my wet palette, some darker, some brighter, some more grey...
- highlight every plates one by one on the fore and the top borders :D
- put some diluted brown in the grooves

The red is quite the same
- Dark flesh then many drybrushes of mephiston red, red + orange Macharius, and some red glazes to correct the color.
- variations on the plates
- highlights
- grooves

The metal is damn simple as we don't look much at it when it's all finished
- Boltgun
- one or two generous washes of Agrax earthshade
- some metal highlights if brave enough

The white marks are made with masking tape and pure white, 2 or 3 coats I guess

The damages follow different techniques :
- With blister foam, I create patches of dark green (Catachan like, but brown could do the job), and then some Codex grey, mostly at the same spots
- Mainly on the fore, I draw some wide streaks with Snakebite+black, then darker and thinner streaks in the middle of the wide ones. At some other places I do bright grey ones
- I stain some places with very diluted dark green like Catachan green
You can see the red is darker and stained at some places on the above pics

For the turquoise light effects :
- either with a brush (as on the gunship bays) or with an airbrush (side of the battleship), I painted some large surface with old Scally green.
- then I put pure white, in the holes and their borders. That's for having a bright shinny blue after.
- I put some turquoise (Sotek green) on the borders of the bay, and some diluted one ine the holes
- I finish with a little touch of pure white again in the holes, but not every holes at the same brightness to make it more reallistic and alive.

Near to the glowing engines, on the sides, I put a very diluted glaze of Scally green on the red, that does a very dark green by itself.

For the purple lights its mostly the same with purple, pink and white, whith maybe more steps and difficulty to get some variations.

And for the Kurak symbol : diluted white, good-shaped brush, and a firm hand ;)

I think all is said ! :)
Cheers,
Karun

Wow. Just wow!
Stuff like this is what makes me want to buy stuff just to paint it.
Then I remember I barely have time enough to paint what I already got and I cry a little bit.

That's an extremely impressive ship. I really like how you've broken up the uniformity of the panels. Thanks for the guide!

I smell a Warp Rift article here! Besides, haven't you considered maybe also trying to do some BFG styled ships? :)

Wow

Really Impressive.

Thanks for sharing the techniques, they will certainly come in handy when I finally dare to tackle my dystopian wars army.

Thanks everyone :)

Not in the short term, as I've got too much projects already. But I'm open to anything, and I won some great resin BFG ships with the Gothicomp.
I don't know how I will use them, not sure I'll ever get the occasion to play BFG, already have too many games and hardly have time to play :
- either painting them just for fun
- or to play them as count-as for Firestorm
- or I consider doing some wrecks or ghostships for my plays :)

The casting is awesome, I will show you them in the future.

Here are some good pics of my Gunship. One of the few Sorylian ships able to fire long range and ine the fore arc, which is precious in this short ranged devestating broadsides faction. ^^

and here with a squadron of 1 heavy cruiser and 3 cruisers :

Just mind blowing! What resin ships did you win during Gothicomp? Personally I'm very curious to see what you'd do with the Battlegroup Helios stuff, but that's just be I guess. :P

Here are the many ships I received as I won in 2 categories : I think it's a cruiser, 3 fregates and 3 destroyers

I post big pics so you can appreciate the great quality of the resin casting !

I don't know what is youe Helios stuff. Some proxies as well ? :)
EDIT : Ho ok it seem it's the same guys if I'm right

Battlegroup Helios are basically BFG proxies designed by Vaaish and Mangozac (who is the guy behind Resin Addict). :)

The FSA models always looked a bit... simple? To me - but you've imbued them with a sense of dirt and realism which shows them in a good light.

Hi :)

Thanks to everyone.
Pix, I could subcribe to the french forum but I'm not sure to be very active, as on that forum. But I will.
And I need to re-traduce the step-by-step in french ! :D

Yes it's hard-science and not gothic. And also most of the old models where effectivly much simple with not much details. But most of the factions have been re-sculpted and are much more sexy now, you could afford a look. ;)
Still it won't be gothic.
