mighty empires
« on: December 10, 2014, 06:00:45 PM »
Starting to look into combining the board game Mighty Empires with my Warmaster armies.

I am board of the basic confrontation with warmaster but I do not know how to go about getting the Mighty Empires board game involved for campaigns.  I have made a tiny map and played out some rules and I love it.

How do others play their campaign?
Does anyone use the mighty empires board?  Original paper board hex tiles or the new models?

pictures would be awesome if you can.  :)

that thread was so old I decided to start a new one.  I was glad to see those comments when I first started looking at the game.

I was just wondering mostly if it was worth it to try and find the old one or just go with the new one that games workshop still supplies though there are no villages included. etc. etc.

I recently received a game called War of Kings; its a resource management game with armies.  I have yet to play the game but I was thinking combat between armies could be settled via a game of Warmaster.

A quick google will land you a PDF of the old ME rules, then just buy the new box.

Being that the new and still available game is 3d modeled forests and mountains etc. I'm worried that I wouldn't be able to fit everything on a tile enough and the fact that villages do not come with the new game.  I have a copy of the original rulebook and the "new" book made for playing out the with warmaster table top armies.

Also, I was pretty sure I was going to just buy as many of the original paperboard tiles as needed (still available just fine on ebay right now) and put a Velcro piece on the one side and also try out magnets on the back side as well for the bridges and towers etc. Not do-able with the modeled hex tiles that are reversible and not even flat.

I love how the new hex tiles look when painted and flocked just right, but functionality over beauty for this guy  :)
back to the original question, pro's and cons of the old versus new and using one or the other with warmaster?

We now play campaign using slightly adjusted ME rules, that go with the "new" plastic ME box. These are extremely simple version compared to the original board game ones, but they work perfectly for us.
Few months back I was trying to go through the old board game version of the rules. I have never played it, but with my current campaign organization experience, I got the impression, that the rules are so complex, that it is nearly impossible to play it as a regular long term campaign unless you and your gaming group are fanatics able to get together few times a week. It's extremely demanding in organization, book keeping, you roll a dice for almost every step you make...

I'd agree with that. The newer one is pretty much linked games with not much overhead. The older game has a lot more logistics.

I guess I will finally need to read the new rules then.
I have been so busy "testing" the old rules with the warmaster additions.

Do you not like the old rules because it takes too much time or just because?

I rather like the old rules, being that it is a game in a game with the celebration of being able to play out the battles......but I have only played a 1 on 1 game by myself just to be able to read through the manual.  I also like how there are so many tables to roll against...though a bit tedious, your army being killed over winter by a  plague could happen and is fun as hell when it does.  ha

a few rules that I didn't like, I thought about just ignoring the "dragon rage" part of it entirely
the banner's being maxxed out at 1,500 points was weird so I was going to raise that to 2,000 and then have no minimum either.

lastly I was going to try and see a way into incorporating a better fleet system but I don't know if I could get ahold of any man o' war ships to even worry about that side of it.  (Anyone in America want to sell some models cheap  :)  ?)

can anyone post a link to the new rules, just to save me some time?  Please, thank you!

If I were to do a campaign, I would actually prefer the old rules as I'd want the logistics rather than just some loosely linked games (from what I remember about them, I wouldn't even call the new rules a "game").

You can get MoW cheap if you're willing to be patient. All of my fleets (1200ish points) have been less than $80USD. Buy the bigger lots and sell off what you don't want.

You're after the second one: https://www.scribd.com/search-documents?query=mighty+empires

I have decided.

I will get all "new" mighty empires stuff starting with a set that I see mostly painted on ebay right now and then getting a few of the expansion sets from games-workshop website with free shipping to my local store.  Then hunt down a few bridges as they come up on ebay and I will be all set.

the new kit does not come with "villages" for the old rules but the expansion sets have a much smaller "city" that I will use as the villages so I will be all set.  they also come with a wizard tower so I will also need to just hunt down the necropolis when they come up on ebay.

do you have any extra man o' war ships you can sell for cheap?   :)

the mighty empires is my Christmas gift and this weekend I will complete my castle walls and hopefully be all set for a proper warmaster campaign minus the fleets

The plastic tiles are two sided. And at least on one side of every type (except for mountains) are fields with farmsteads. So if you build a village somewhere, you can just turn the tile upside down.

Dave: you are right, the "new" system is more of a simple mechanics how to connect battles and how to keep meaningful competition among players rather than game.
I'd personally also go for the "old" version, but I cannot see how to keep the logistic going in "real life". My experiences from Mordheim campaigns (which is strongly campaign-based game) is, that the main point of the campaing is always the table top battle. All the other paper/map things turn usually into the "sand in the clockwork" with comming turns. The more complicated it is, the earlier it gets jammed.

HHHMMM.....I did not know that about the village side vs. the barren side of the tile.  That simplifies things greatly then.

I still cant find the instruction manual online but I have one coming to me from e-bay for next week.  the version for download from scribd seems to be a pay per download thing  :(

Has anyone ever done the naval battles with the mighty empires? I see that it seems rather cheap to build A ship but they are also supposed to be in squadrons so I would love to know what others are doing there.  I am a long ways off from being able to do any man o' war games.

got my mighty empires box from ebay today, sad to see that if I flip them over they are not the same thing on the other side just with a village.

so I still need to get something for villages to play the original warmaster rules....and I really like villages because of the whole logistics "problems" they can cause.

Does anyone know of anyone that I can get the original village markers from, there are 0 on ebay, 0.

by the way, the mold seam on these tiles are horrendous and makes them go together really poorly so I have a lot of sanding to do AND all of the peg holes are too small so I will need to drill them out to fit the markers into them....in case anyone was thinking on doing the same, games workshop should probably do a better quality control job on these or something.   ha

Aren't the things in the middle villages?
