Tale of Warmaster Painters... [SEPTEMBER THREAD]
« on: September 05, 2009, 09:06:09 PM »
This is the thread for all September entries. While it 'officially' starts next Monday there's no harm in getting going! In the first week (7th-13th) I'd suggest that painting is optional and ask that everyone involved say a little about themselves and what they're planning to paint.

So far the following have joined up:

pw (Empire)
azrael71 (Goblins)
jchaos79 (Undead)
Pugwash (Araby)
Rolgan (Orcs)
Lex (Goblinoid Kislev)  <-- dont you love being able to edit in yourself .....
Angor (Dogs of War)
Meister.Petz (Empire)
Swordmaster (High Elves)
m4jumbo (Empire)
Stomm (WMA Romans)

My entry to this inaugural ‘TOWP’  is going to be an Empire army which I’m hoping to get to 2000 points. I’d always planned on painting them up in the red and white of Talabheim and when Meister.Petz shared his techniques for painting just this scheme a couple of weeks ago it was time to start. I then discovered just how slow a painter I am. Hence my need for a challenge like this - and I’m fully aware of the potential irony of the situation when I fall at the first hurdle!
I’ve got most of what I need in a pile of ziplock bags but in order not to scare myself with the size of the task at hand I’ve limited myself to unpacking this lot:

The silvery knights are about to head into a jar of Dettol, the rest have been sprayed black (so I guess I’m already cheating!).

My eventual list, based largely on what I fancy painting, is this:

General on Griffon, Orb of Majesty (235)
Hero (80)
Hero (80)
Wizard, Ring of Magic (75)
4 Halberdiers (180)
4 Crossbows (220)
4 Knights (440)
2 Pistoliers (190)
2 Flagellants (140)
2 Cannon (170)
Helblaster (50)
Steamtank (120)

Total 1980 leaving 20 spare for magic weapons.

Having played exactly four games of WM I’m not expecting this list to be particularly good but it does look fun to paint. Eventually I hope to paint up a further 500 points or so to give me more options.

I have had this army sat for over a year now and keep getting distracted so here we are.
They will also constitue a large goblin only force and cover the nomadic orc list.
That and I cannot buy the Chaos Dwarves in time.
The army currently stand at:
Painted units
2 Giants
2 Rock Lobbas
4 Pump Wagons
4 Spear Chukkas
6 Fanatic cannons
2 Pump wagons
1 black orcs
2 heroes on wyvern
9 wolf riders (4 of then bofa warg riders)
25 assorted goblin and orc characters

So for the tale the units to prep and paint are:

6 Boar Riders (1 savage boars), mights split to 3 models a stand for these to get a couple of extra units.
3 Black Orcs
8 Orc Warriors (2 Savage)
2 Spider riders
22 Goblins (2x Forest Goblin, 2x Night Goblins, 2x Archers, 16 bofa goblins)
4 wolf riders (4 bofa wargs)
6 wolf chariots
3 stands of boar chariots
Loads of squigs
Potentially 2 units of squig hoppers

Approximate Total points: 7000.
Lets see how we go :)
Here are the units awaiting attention.

Well, I will pick up the glove and see if I can manage....  I guess I can grab parts of my painting gear when I am stuck in an hotel and spend time doing some units, instead of watching (pay)TV....

I did not see anything in the rules that prohibits me from starting with undercoated troops ?? (and if I do see it I will simply edit it out  ;)), so I will dig out a box of troops that actualy even saw action already at an overseas event....  and IIRC they even squared off against Rick's greenskins (  <--  mine wont be green, I am going for the yellow horde of the Goblo Khan Heyou)

<insert a viable 2k Kislev list>
<insert picture of the combined army>

My camera sucks, but here is the ~1k points of OG I intend to paint.

2 Units Goblins
2 Units Orcs
4 Units Wolf riders
1 Unit Boar Boys
1 Unit Chariots
1 Unit Trolls
1 Giant (I wish I had a BOFA Storm Giant)
1 General on Wyvern
2 Heros, 1 G, 1O
1 Goblin Shaman

If I can get these done, I may work on a WMA ancients project

The BOFA giant is superior to the standard ones.
I have just checked a place I know that sometimes has rare oop stuff in but they do not even have any BOFA stock in :(
Hope you happen upon one.

Ok then, you got me. I very seriously doubt that I'll be able to get one unit painted a week, but since my WMA EIR army is relatively compact it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

It is already partially painted, but its much less finished than my WM Empire army, which is basically two units of crossbows, a couple of halberdiers and a pair of cannons away from 2k, so going for that would be cheating a bit really...

I'll post a full list of units and some photos as and when I can grab a minute or two and the time to download the entire contents of a 2gig memory card to my Macbook. Needless to say there are a lot of units of Legions... Oh and all are at least undercoated already...

PS. pw, the one thing I'd definately change in your selection is putting your general on a Griffon. Give the Griffon to a hero armed with the SoM, otherwise you're going to risk losing the game every time you want to use the attacks and terror from the Griffon. Also it means that you can use the IMHO really nice general models in the Empire character pack...

I go with undeads, about 1k -1,5k.

This is a really challenge for me becaue I am in my few months before defending my PhD in chemestry, so I guess the next months will be quite difficult for me. But I will try to follow the challenge of TWMP.

My style of painting fluctuates a lot with my mood, I don't know why, but I have notice that during the years I had a brush in my hand. I used to paint 28mm and 1/72 scale since I discover 10mm, then all changes and now I am almost focus in this scale. Sometimes I am tempted with 6mm scale but by now I never start with this scale.

Enough for introducing myself, lets go to introduce the army: I have an undead army and I start painting it three months ago. I have already painted 1 skelleton infantry unit, 1 bow, 1 skull chukka, 1 chariots and two characters/markers. The pics are upload in jchaos project thread. But those units do not count in the TWMP.

The rest of the army in bare metal is that follows:

- 6 infantry (one tomb guards and other egyptian style undeads)  completed 2/6
- 2 bows   completed 2/2
- 2 funerary swarm insects (2 base per unit) 1/2 completed
- 1 chariots
- 2 cavalry completed 1/2
- 2 carrions
- 2 giants
- 1 dragon
- 1 markers for raise undead spell completed
- 1 hero on chariot completed
- 2 blisters of characters (some liches and characters undeterminate how many bases) completed 3/5

Okay, so I have been a fan of Warmaster since it was released.  However, soon after I picked up the first armies I had a 'break' from wargaming for several years.  When I got back into the hobby, I found that Warmaster had disappeared, and while there were plenty of folks who liked the game, few still played it.  Undeterred by this, and the fact that the miniatures weren't available in Australasia, I began collecting armies from the US web store, starting with the army that I found most inspiring - the new Araby range.

Moving to Canberra in Australia (from New Zealand), I found a local player who was keen to get into some warmaster, and we began playing regularly, which has inspired me to start painting some of the armies I own.  My long term goals are to run a large and spectacular warmaster demo game, to inspire some interest, and either run or attend a warmaster tournament (which may involve a fair chunk of travel).

Onto the Araby army.  I will post more of my thoughts as to the army in due course, but the force I intend to paint for this project, is as follows:

4 x Spearmen
4 x Bowmen
2 x Guards
8 x Knights
3 x Desert Riders
2 x Camel Riders
1 x Elephants
2 x Magic Carpets
+ A full suite of Characters, including Djinn and Elephant Mount

As it stands right now, the army looks like this, but not for long!  I'll be starting on the Spearmen momentarily...

All these pictures of fresh unpainted armies are getting me itching to get onto the online store to buy more toys. And that would be very stupid given that I've already got my Empire (2000 pts), Lizardmen (1500 pts), High Elves (1500 pts) and Orcs (500ish) all waiting for attention!

Got to say of the 3 official armies I don't have, I am VERY tempted by the araby range.
The sculpts look stunning and you very rarely see a painted one anywhere.
It will have to go on my very long wants list.

Ok, here's my part ... I'm also cheating bec. some of the stuff is already painted. I present a commission work - a part of an Empire army:

This includes:
2 Units Halberdiers (1 painted)
1 Unit Cannons (1 painted)
3 Units Knights (2 men painted)
3 Units Pistoliers
2 Units Flagellants
1 Wizard mounted on a War Altar

These are 1100 Pts ... 130 Pts already painted BUT GUYS, let's make a deal. I'll add some skavish power including:

2 Units Stormvermin

This adds another 110 Pts of painting.

Greetings from Austria
