Last Stand for the Dwarfs (300)
« on: October 12, 2014, 11:35:17 AM »
I've decided to make up a scenario involving the dwarfs defending their stronghold. The idea is to make the orc force larger overall but split them up and give other advantages to the dwarfs...... A heroic last stand for the dwarfs!!!

The dwarf cannot be Broken, they are defending their stronghold to the last dwarf. The whole battle is all about the tales and legends formed after the battle. The Dwarven Stronghold will eventually fall, but how many Orcs have they taken with them? Did this battle cause the orc waaagh to lose it's impetus? (this is inspired from the film 300 )

The Orc army must have at least 5 units on the platform where the dwarf throne is, or kill the dwarf general.
The Orcs start the game with 800 victory points. Each round that they haven't achieved their objective they give the dwarf army 100 victory points. If the orcs haven't achieved any victory conditions by turn 8 the dwarf army wins automatically

The battle will take place inside the dwarf stronghold, deployment for the dwarfs is anywhere in the main room. The dwarfs have a 2 tiered hill in the centre, this represents stairs leading up to a throne. The dwarf statue lets any dwarfs within 12” reroll psychology tests.

There are beer barrels that allows the dwarf player to select one unit per turn within 10cm as “Defender of the Beer”, this unit gets to reroll missed hits every turn (dwarfs really hate anyone that tries to take their beer)

There are doors at the end of the tunnels. These can be either be locked and barred, or left open (dwarf players choice) If the doors are barred the dwarf player won't be able to see what units are coming towards him, the orc player uses a coin to represent each unit (a bit like space hulk) Once an orc unit reaches the door they will have to smash through it. All doors have 6 hits, 5+ armour. missile fire from infantry has no effect.

The dwarf general can decide to take some desperate measures that will reduce their victory points, but damage the oncoming hoard....... for example ....... force the young and female dwarfs to fight (similar to helms deep) or destroy a huge statue of a dwarf God to crush everything in the corridor

The orcs get twice as many points. We will experiment with this scenario
I have about 4500 points of orc troops, 60 units (without characters, flyers or artillery) .... with characters about 5500 points of Orcs
Without artillery/flyers/cavalry/chariots i have 2790, 42 units, with no characters

How will you represent it, terrain wise?

Probably something fairly simple.
I've did a similar scenario with warhammer a while ago.

For that i just used grey paper cut into shape.
Then rubble on the stronghold floor, doors and columns from D&D

this reminds me of "the battle of east gate" scenario for warhammer 4th edition from WD159

wonder how that would translate into WM?

for those unfamiliar, a relief column of dwarfs is attacked marching to aid the defenders in recaptured Karak 8-peaks, they are surrounded by orcs and goblins under command of skarsnik, they form a defensive circle ready to die then boom, the gates explode and the other dwarfs come to the rescue

Always wanted to play that game but we never had the right models.... might be a good one to try for WM someday

Sounds like a good battle. Never heard of it before.

There is a dwarf v orc/gobbo warmaster battle in a warmag. It might be the same scenario, sounds similar

There was a pdf in the resources directory of the old GW site I think. It is named Battle of the East Gate and was part of the Battle of Legends series. It  was a 4000 vs 4000 pts battle of dwarfs vs Orcs & Goblins and features an Orc general with Cmd 9.

PM me if you want to have the scenario. I don't really know where to put it otherwise.

Kind regards,

Jo

"The dwarf statue lets any dwarfs within 12” reroll psychology tests"- I think this needs some modifying for Warmaster rather than Fantasy.

Would you include any restrictions on the Orcs? eg. Can they use rocklobbers or flyers? (a ceiling usually says no to such things).

How wide are the gates? Unless you can accumulate hits over turns or get a 'wounded' state as for monsters it's going to be damn hard to beat 6 hits and a 5+ save in one round of combat (I assume the door doesn't get pushed back, pursued, or have the conflict ongoing in any way- otherwise it'd be too easy to destroy).
(Just for the sake of easy stats- it's going to take an average of 18 attacks to knock down a door in one go- so a charging boar boy unit joined by hero on wyvern)
