what is your favorite brigade formation?
« on: September 01, 2014, 03:33:10 AM »
my favorite is 2 marauders supporting 2 warriors each flanking 2 spawns which will be placed slightly forward to try to absorb as many missile shots as possible.  It's scary to move it against cannon but anything else seems to wash off like spring water against this hammer of khorne!

obviously other units will protect the flanks and support it one way or another but what is your favorite brigade to move across the field of battle?

Trollslayer BBQ

take one unit of trollslayer, looking every way BUT forward stuck in U-formation around a Flamecannon. Yes, the non-standard formation will restrict their movement, but they are limited to 10cm anyway, totting the arty.

Any flyer or flanking attack WILL fave a FULL MOVE charge (remember that the movement limitation is only for regular movement!!!)

I think I know what you are describing and I am intrigued but can you get a picture?  I can't picture it in my head.....it is early morning and my 2 year old is trying desperately to be as distracting as possible  ha!

I guess what is throwing me is that you need 2 trollslayers to make the U shape right?

ps. my favorite is positioning the flame cannon just ahead of 2 dwarf warriors to either side with one stand in support on the flanks.....so maybe about the same

I only have a chaos and a dwarf army.

With Orc n goblin, I like brigade 4 unit of orks warriors in column. Not very original, but effective. It is a list with a lot of different choices and sometimes the simple brigade of 4 inf is ignored.

For Empire I like the idea of using skirmishers to get a battle line very long. So the brigade will be 2crossbow+2halberdiers+2skirmishers.

Also like the very usual "Nuln brigade" of 2 Xbow or handgunners in the sides, and cannon +hellblaster in the middle.

For Kislev I like two horse archers (in sides) and two knights in the middle. So Horse archer+knight+knight+horse archer. So horse archers could shoot to enemies supporting units, and knights goes to melee.

Not too original brigades but I like using them.

My favourite brigade is 4 units of Dragon Ogres!!!!!!! :)

On a more serious note, I like the good old 2 units of Empire Halberdiers, backing up 2 units of crossbowmen - all in line. It can shield a large section of table and give a reasonable account of itself (for the points it costs) and will hold the enemy up for a turn, while you prepare your knights/cannons for the counterattack!

I had a game last night and tried a pair of slayer BBQs out, interesting brigade and I'll definitely make more use of it in future

my thought (and experience) however was to keep the rear stand level with one of the edges (the one nearest to any enemy) as the extra 4 attacks will come in very handy and stand a better chance of taking a stand or two off a charging unit, or deterring the charge altogether

I was on the other side of that game!  And the Flame Cannons were unpleasant ...

Gave that formation some thought on the way home and I wonder if it's just better to have 2 slayers in column either side of a Flame Cannon (or similar for Flagellants & Helblaster?).  Someone comes in the side they get 12 attacks back.  And from the front 2D6 shots + 11 attacks back?  if you wanted all-round defence, you could turn the back stands to face rearwards and close them up together behind the artillery piece.

the problem there is that you can only include a single unit of slayers in a brigade...

Schoolboy error!  Apologies. In which case I will experiment with said formation only with Flagellants and Helblasters.
