Torpedoes
« on: March 21, 2014, 10:01:15 PM »
Background: I'm collecting a BFG fleet but haven't yet had a game.

The 2010 FAQ seems to give torps quite a series knock -  is this warranted i.e. were they overpowered? Does it not throw off all the points values in the rules?

Even with the smaller size I haven't noticed any issues with balance being off.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Same here (assuming you're referring to the standardised torpedo marker size).

It's harder to hit the enemy with a big salvo now that you don't get a wide spread, but on the other hand, it's easier to launch them out through your own lines or get them past obstacles without clipping an asteroid or something.

Mostly it just stops you combining salvos into a ludicrous table-spanning wave of death.

I have to admit, though, I still like to use the varying spread sizes in home games. Mainly because we use the markers that came with the game, and having a 3-pronged marker that's actually a 2- or 4-strength salvo confuses my simple brain. We usually cap it at 6-wide, and stack extra torps on top to represent a larger salvo.

got to agree with the above. The standardised markers have their ups and downs, the main one for me being escorts.

Specifically, a large squadron of, say, Cobras (4-6) fires a salvo, that salvo launched from the Middle of the squadron, despite this being a fraction of the squadrons width. Not really a problem, I can work with it, just feels off. We usually play with the original markers anyway, just through dint of having them if anything.
I refuse to be killed by something I've never heard of.

The 3 wide template does make them harder to aim properly. I generally use Torps as area denial by firing many salvoes in a general area (imps are fantastic for this) or as a point blank shotgun against a shielded target after I've fired my weapons elsewhere since torps ignore them.
