2014 BFG Reboot from GW maybe?!
« on: September 20, 2013, 03:02:20 AM »
Hey all,

I was just looking through the Bell of Lost souls forums when I saw this little bit of news
http://www.lounge.belloflostsouls.net/showthread.php?35659-Faeit-Epic-40k-to-return-in-2014

2014 might see the return of Specialist Games starting with Epic, if this is true then there might be hope for a Return of Battle Fleet Gothic!  One can only hope right?

Veeeeery skeptical about this.

GW is only about the product these days rather than the gaming experience (I assume you've all seen the £7000 chapter deal?). As the SG provided an alternative experience rather than big sales I doubt they'd stick their neck out again. Still...if they actually supported the SG, lines maybe more people would have gotten into them, but that's a different topic.

Don't get me wrong, I would love for this to happen! Hell, I would love for GW to go back what they were, pre LOTR. For me, that's when the rot began to set in. Anything SG related seemed half-hearted as soon as the LOTR lines got going in earnest (bout '03-'04 onwards). Anyone else notice this?

At best, I reckon GW will release some one-shot a-la Space-Hulk/Dreadfleet.

Still...It is a ray of light in the darkness. Roll on 2014!

i hope they bring it back

I'm still hoping that this is all part of a re-release marketing plan, suddenly remove it all, then after a year bring it back with new all plastic kits that mean you can actually make any given ship variant (like with chaos and imperial cruisers) for every race

but this is unlikley as they seem to be unwilling to risk money on new things......although LOTR seems to be dying down abit now as the films have been out for years

With GW current business model and high prices:

1. Would new BFG be affordable?

2. Would we even want a new BFG by GW?

Right $35 for five frigates with the bits to make them a Firestorm or Sword... $85 for a Battleship... Just because :P. GW's pricing is seriously insane at the moment, its like theyre kicked back throwing darts at a percentage chart to see how much they can wring people for this week.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Before lotr GW made good money, with lotr introduced their income went sky high. All that money made allot of things possible in 40k and fantasy production wise.

Secondly I liked lotr more then 40k and fantasy. :)

christ i've just seen the £7000 chapter box

excuse my french but what F***ing fool with no life would buy that

i got a second hand 2006 harley davidson 1200CC sportster (with the all black engine) for less than that, including insurance

this is what is wrong with games workshop, its all about squeezing money out of "look a new box set"

i now think that if they did re-do BFG i would not buy any, it would just cost fourtune, which is why i stopped collecting 40K in the first place and part of why i went to BFG (yay afforbleish)

Heh, that chapter box idea was pretty cool of them. I could buy my car about three or four times (depending on mileage and such) for that.

If BFG did a box set like dreadfleet it would depend on the cost, miniatures and out-of-the-box play style if I would buy it.

Let me put it this way.... If Dread Fleet was the 'revisiting' of Man Of War, I really hope that GW DONT touch BFG! I would prefer it in its current state, to be honest.

That said, I find this incredibly unlikely, especially given just how soon it is after they just axed the entire miniature lines. To then pick it up 12 months later and revisit a whole new set of minis seems a little dumb.

If anything was to be done it'd be at a non compatible scale (to prevent back door forcing purchase) and would likely be more similar to a hybrid wargame/boardgame. I could also see it being figures that were squadron based.
As we Imperials say, "The Emperor [class battleship] Protects..."

IF Gw is going to release a "one shot" boardgame based on BFG, I'm definetely going to buy it, just for the models.. I'm quite skeptic but you never know.

While I play 40k and 40k was the first thing I was introduced to I didn't get into bfg until later in it's released life sometime around 2007, and by far it's my favorite GW game, every game I have ever had is just awesome and I love the models and rules for the system even if they aren't perfect or whatnot, it's still my favorite game.

If GW decided to make a boxed game lke Space Hulk and Dreadfleet then in my opinion thats all it's going to be a boxed game without expanded rules. Witch would be pretty cool anyway, I'n not convinced that there business model would allow for a revamp of BFG  and to be honest \, part o the magic that makes BFG a great game is the fact that GW didn't mess with it and rewrote the rules or new editions like they did to 40k and whatnot

I'm very sceptical but I would love these Epic / BFG rumours to be true.  A one shot game would be worth getting just to try and get new people into SG!

Not happening, at least not until  "Hobbit" movies are being made. Some time after the last movie is out and the hype is gone they would have to replace the Third "Big" game for something else. So maaaby the specialist games could fit that gap. But since Hobbit movies are so succesfull there are rumors that hollywood would milk that cow a bit longer. There is a lot more Tolkien stuff that can be made into movies :)

I'm not sure they need to bother waiting.  I'm a big fan of the LOTR SBG and as far as I can see, GW is doing a pretty good job of killing The Hobbit right from the get-go.  Overpriced releases, "starter" sets with limited playability, total lack of promotion or support.  Based on the response to the releases for the first movie, I would hazard a guess that the only thing that will keep them releasing for the next two movies will be their contractural obligations to do so.   :-\

That said, the death of specialist games has re-ignited my interest in BFG and sparked me to finally put togther the Ork fleet I'd been planning on doing for years now.  Of course its all coming off eBay, and I'm paying more for it than I would if I'd bought it last year from GW, but I've already got a sizable fleet inbound.

Now, if I could just find some of those Fighta-Bomberz miniatures...  ::)
