proxy ideas: Dark Elf
« on: August 04, 2013, 01:44:54 PM »
As many of you know, since GW stopped producing 10mm figures, I have started making lists that map warmaster troop types to miniatures that are widely available today:
http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/2013/07/warmaster-miniatures-in-the-post-gw-era/

There are several armies I haven't prepared yet, so I am turning this into a collaborative effort. Feel free to post ideas/links here and I will sum it up on the blog post to have everything collected there. I will try to keep it up to date as new lines are released to cover the gap in the 10mm market.

so this thread is about the Dark Elves:

Spearmen
Crossbowmen
Witch Elves
Dark Riders
Cold One Knights
Harpies
War Hydra
Bolt Thrower
General
Hero
Sorceress
Manticore (Mount)
Chariot (Mount)
Cauldron of Blood

The two main suppliers for Dark Elves are Kallistra and Pendraken - as the Kallistra range is based on the Pendraken figures, then compatibility should be very high between the suppliers.

Spearmen
Kallistra 701
Pendraken FDE2

Crossbowmen
Kallistra 702
Pendraken FDE1, FDE8

Witch Elves
Pendraken FDE7

Dark Riders
?? Perhaps a celtic style human cavalry?

Cold One Knights
Kallistra 704
Pendraken FDE5

Harpies
Pendraken FBG12 Gargoyles - they are human size flyers - but not really harpies

War Hydra
??

Bolt Thrower
Kallistra 703

General & Hero
Kallistra 707 command
Pendraken FDE10 and FDE4 also FDE3 and FDE9 sword armed

Sorceress
There may be a figure in the Kallistra or Pendraken Command packs.
Pendraken High Elf FHE6 has a wizard style figure, that is perhaps female.

Manticore (Mount)
Pendraken DN58  (perhaps a little small?)

Chariot (Mount)
Kallistra 705 chariots

Cauldron of Blood
I think the stove in the Pendraken Dwarf cooks pack would be a good basis for this, if the top was trimmed off.

Good start, I'd consider using these from magister militum as dark riders

also this or this from Ral Partha would make a good manticore proxy, or as the basis for a hydra conversion

with everyone's consent, I'd like to tidy up the thread and make a master list in the first post of each of these threads :)

I would definitly do that (the tyding up), and try to move discussion/debate on stuff to separate threads too!.

I would keep the contributors posts in the thread! Just shorten them where needed.

Thoughts on the Cauldron of Blood:

I really like the idea of using an Eldar Avatar from Epic scale to use as a kind of statue of Khaine:

This one uses a 28mm figure for the Khaine statue:

http://www.2md.dk/gw-warmaster/images/armies/dark_elves/lothaires_dark_elves/Cauldron%20of%20Blood%20%28Front%29.jpg

I especially like the idea of a WW2 helmet being used as a cauldron.

Apologies for the necromancy but the link to Magister Militum figures doesn't work - what are they please?

I honestly can't remember for sure, but I think it was these

http://www.magistermilitum.com/era/fantasy/fef6-elven-horse-archers.html

the 10mm elven horse archers, with a dark colour scheme and a few spikes they'd make fine dark riders

OK apparently a really good cauldron in plastic bitz is the Warhammer 40k vehicle searchlight you get with Imperial Guard tanks.

Someone also suggested using the 40k era Eldar Avatar as Malekith.

For the cauldron i used a 28mm upside down WWII german helmet

Very nice cauldron.  Good use of reds!

Another War Hydra proxy?

http://www.15mm.co.uk/products/hot35-giant-hydra

65mm high - how does that compare with the GW original?
