Imperial Grand Cruisers - are they worth it?
« on: May 14, 2013, 11:26:44 PM »
The GW Vengeance-style grand cruiser is still available. I think they can only be used by a couple of chaos lists and 1-2 Imperial list.

I've also read that it's a pita to put together and the pieces don't all line up.

So with repulsive's being silly prices (negating the benefit of having one of them in a reserve fleet), how worthwhile are the Vengeance/Exorcist/Avenger - would you get one now?

I love the grand cruiser models. Definitely recommended. Plus, I didn't find the kit to be all that hard to pt together.

So would you say it was worth getting a couple to round out all the IN options (well I'm missing a number of escorts and the Apocalypse)? My hesitation was that they only seem to appear in the one fleet list, so they'd be a bit more limited than most other ships (than and while I can get a repulsive for the SO's chaos, I think there's sod all chance of getting one for my imperial fleet given the prices).

I've had two and both were an absolute bitch to put together, lots of flash in the wrong places >:( Dan must have got a cleaner casting!

Other than that they make decent support ships- Either Vengence or Excorcist would suit you best IMO. Excorcist gives you more AC and both give you long range fire.

If you like them and would consider using more than one, I would probably pick up two.

funny, i got one and i am assembling it right now, and apart from a very small, easily fixed part at the engines, everything fits smoothly, no flash at all  ;D (which is especially notable considering the drastically dropping qualitiy of the last casts that were sold...)

and i am magnetizing mine, since the role it will take varies depending on my list, apart from the really nice model (i really, really love the design), i found a good use for every single variant of the chassis.

but yeah, if its a good choice for you personally depends on your fleet....  the question is: what do you need in your fleet? can one of the grand cruisers fulfill that need?

Nova Cannons are for these sissies who as a kid too preferred to throw stones at the others from a safe distance rather than closing in and get into a real fight ;D

Do it. Mine is older and went together with no issues but newer ones may be worse. The model is butt ugly imo but its CHEAP for a tank (Avenger) or pocket battleship (Vengeance) or a beefy carrier with some teeth (Exorcist).

The Chaos variants are ok. The Retaliator is a solid line ship and a viable alternative to a Styx, especially in a more close up style fleet. The Executor makes a pretty solid tank like the Avenger and has great lance power but is once again best in a close up style fleet.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

I currently have 14 cruisers/BCs (which I'm in the process of magnetising to use how I need), 5 cobras, 3 swords, 2 CLs (torps), 1 retaliation, 1 emperor (it's been an expensive month!)

Plan is to get some more escorts and CLs. I'm trying to resist the temptation of the SM battlebarge (not least because they're going for silly money) as the SO and I are also finishing off her chaos and eldar fleets at the same time.

If you paint the Grand Cruisers a unique scheme, as if they are mothballed vessels pulled out of retirement or some other plausible explanation, you could use them both in your IN fleet and your SO chaos fleet, especially magnetised.

I say do it.

It's a great ship with great range, and enough firepower to cripple a cap ship even at max range, it's great in what I like to call "take on everything" fleet, take 2 in conjunction w/ 3 devastation squadron your bound to ruin Eldar fleets. It's got enough hit points to survive and 3 shields. I rarely see it on the field and when I do see it I only ever see 1 of them. I like to field 2 of them they can hold of a would be attacker from multiple facings at 60cm it's a great ship.

Ordered two. No idea if they'll definitely get cast up but that's what GW customer service said.
