I have been thinking about using Battlestar Galactica models as proxies for a Tau Fleet.
Any comments or input would be great. Hopefully I have this post in the right Forum.
A big Battlestar should work as a Custodian. The recent (?) movie had the Colonial Fleet all linked up with data sharing and so forth so that seems like the Custodian targeting array. Of course a bug let the Cylons switch off the system which could cause problems in a scenario. Any successful hit and run attack on the ship loses the targeting array?
Galactica and her peers would sit well as Heroes. I had wondered about using Galactica as an Explorer which would give lots of fighters/bombers but taking too many escorts would not fit the theme so well.
Slightly smaller battlestars (which can turn more easily) would be Protectors.
Emissaries are a bit more challenging. The smallest of the battlestars would be OK. But I'd think a version with 2 fighter bays and a strength 3 missile bay would be better than dragging along an orca/warden proxy or having ion cannons.
Merchants could be big fleet support vessels, although there might need to be masses of un(under)-armed ones for the rag-tag fleet. Also this leads one towards too many smaller support vessels.
Wardens (Orcas) can be small Fleet Support vessels. Castellans could be these small Fleet Support vessels with a landing bay to simulate the missile launch facilities.
Now ordinance has some challenges for me. Drone controlled missiles sounds a bit too like Cylons or Tin-men. So I thought a Raptor model as a missile marker would work - it controls the missile spread and remains in play until the final run in to the target ship, then returns for refueling/re-arming. The vehicle can apparently also be armed with missiles, as well as fulfilling the recon/scout role.
Fighters are pretty obvious - I'll go for the classic old school ones, from my childhood.
What to proxy for a Tau Manta is probably the trickiest decision. I had thought a stand with two (or 3) fighters on it, representing a squadron armed for an anti-ship strike and therefore not acting as fighters. They could be resilient because they actually are fighters and there are more of them than a typical fighter stand.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
