Haven't touched BFG in years, got a game tomorrow!
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:08:37 PM »
Hey folks,

I was hoping to get a few pointers on a 1500 point chaos fleet for a game tomorrow.  I haven't played BFG in years and want to refresh my memory a bit.  I know I'll be up against an IN player, but I usually prefer to have one standard list and sort of wing it against all comers.

Anyway, what I know I used to field regularly:
-Repulsive with all the trimmings
-2 carnages
-2 devastations
-2 slaughters

I also have painted 3 escorts, (I think they're iconoclasts, but I'm sure they could be whatever they wanted to be on game day), and all my cruisers are magnetized and can become anything they need to be.

This leaves me with 175 points for warlords, rerolls, escorts, or whatever else I feel like.  My usual strategy was to try to stay at range if possible, batter the enemy with carnage/dev/repulsive long range killing power, and then run the slaughters in point blank when the enemy inevitable got close.  The iconoclasts kinda trail the fleet, threaten to get behind the enemy if they close recklessly, and occasionally heroically tackle large bomber waves.

Anyway, is this considered generally a solid fleet?  What sort of command structure should I look at?  Should I stick with either ranged-skirmishing style, and drop the carnages for acherons?  Or perhaps go for a closing fleet and add more up-close killing power?

Are chaos escorts any good?  I've never had much luck with them, and always find myself wishing I'd just taken an extra cruiser instead.  Honestly the best use of the iconoclasts I've found is simply eating huge bomber waves.

All input is much appreciated.  Thanks!

What you have will work just fine. For your extras Id stick with the basic warlord since its going to have to go on the Repulsive and take a lord for the Devistations (in case theydont get decent leadership, if they do then put him on what ever you want. For Marks its up to you really but Tzeenitch is over priced while Khorne and Slaanish are somewhat counter to your fleets layout so Nurgle? Thats 1495 right there. You might consider swapping the Slaughters and Marks for Acherons squadroned with your Carnages for a pure stand off fleet.

Infidels are great escorts, Iconoclasts are ok and Idolators are a bit overpriced but Id steer clear of them unless your sure of what you have wysiwyg ;).

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Hey Shiver! Sounds like a good fleet though I think andrew makes a good point on the Acherons. Have a good game!

Hmmmm, alrighty.  Haven't fully made up my mind.  I'll decide when I get there today, lol.

It's either going to be some escorts to hang out with the slaughters and try to get behind the enemy, or I'll go pure kiting fleet and take some acherons.  Never taken those ships before actually!  Should be interesting.

Much thanks for the tips!

Of course! Let us know how it goes. P.s. I have had success with all of the chaos escorts.

ALL the escorts?  :o Please, explain me (us) how to use profitably the Iconoclast. I can't really think of nothing about those ships! (apart from point filler)
Sorry for the off topic...

One possible use: (1 or 2) Squadrons of 3 in front of your fleet to constantly force leadership checks before your opponent can fire on something of value. :)

I do affirm that the Iconoclast is overpriced, but I think having fast escorts with 90 degree turns like that which have FLR weapon batteries can be very good at getting an optimal shooting angle and have an easier chance at setting up a lock-on angle and yet still keeping a safer facing for return fire. I have used them to some success by keeping them behind the bulk of the fleet and popping them out from behind the front line to either beat up and follow around a crippled/damaged enemy or to get behind an enemy battleship and trail them. Same with Infidels. BFG:R has the Iconoclast at 25pts, which I think is much more appropriate.

Iconoclast is most awesome!
Three locked on Iconoclasts crippled an Emperor Battleship (with iirc 3 shields down, full healt) in one salvo.
I always run one squadron of 3 of them since then.

I mean, get more and you have 6x3 = 18 weapon batteries on a highly mobile platform.

Infidels are grand!
Torpedoes in a Chaos fleet, I run two squadrons of three. :)

None of them are overpriced in my opinion. Escorts are nifty things that require greater care then the capital ships.

Usually I run my escorts mostly at the back or outskirts of my fleet.

Hey folks!

Game went very well and was loads of fun.  Big victory for chaos!

Alright so neither of us had played for like 3 years or so, both a bit rusty on strategy, but still a fun game.  We rolled a fleet engagement, and ended up on the B deployment, (both sides kiting sideways on opposite ends of the board.)  Perfect for me!

I ran the repulsive, 2 devs, 2 carnages, 2 slaughters, and 3 iconoclasts.  He had an emperor, a tyrant, dominator, gothic, 2 dauntlesses, and then 2 squads of escorts.  Swords and the ones with the lances I think.

Main theme of the game was very ineffective shooting phases!  There were multiple occasions when we were both amazed at how little damage had happened.  I once had both slaughters locked-on and at close range inflict a whopping 1 point of damage on a dauntless!  Another time I braced my repulsive against what I thought would be crippling damage, only to remain entirely unscathed!  Very goofy!

Anyway I got the game off to a great start.  I had put the slaughters and iconoclasts in my rear deployment zone, and early enough that he took the bait and put a decent portion of his ships across from them.  The main bulk of my force was in the middle, and the repulsive in front.  First turn I AAF'd the slaughters/icons, and rolled crazy well and totally left that side of the board empty.  The rest of my fleet raced directly for the back of his fleet, and caught the dominator and gothic out of position.  I would say 2/3rds of his fleet was totally out of range to do anything productive for the first half of the battle.

First turn of shooting crippled the dominator, and then it took another TWO turns of my ENTIRE fleet shooting at it for it to die, lol.  The gothic made a heroic escape with some AAF roles and rejoined the rest of his fleet.  The first move worked very well, I had killed a ship, and my speedy boats were totally outmaneuvering his slow fleet which had to totally come about.  I goofed a little bit and made a mistake which left my repulsive stranded.  When his ships had finally come around and were a solid mass, I split my fleet in two to force him to go after only one of them.  I should have had the repulsive turn faster, but it got caught and took a lot of damage over a couple of turns.

Everything worked out though, and my ships circled his from two directions and slowly whittled his forces down.  My repulsive barely escaped with 2 hits left before managing to disengage.  The iconoclasts failed in basically everything, wiffing all their shots and then dying to assault boats, but hey, I guess the assault boats didn't hit something more important eh?  Battle culminated with the emperor exploding after 3 rounds of very concentrated fire, and it took out 3 escorts in the resulting explosion.

Very fun game!  Thanks for all the tips!

sounds like you had fun despite the bad rolling :)
on the escorts, am more of a fluff gamer so i try to include escorts in all my fleets, even some of the "bad" ones
