BFG Skirmish
« on: December 08, 2012, 01:57:25 PM »
Guys,
I was thinking in writing and testing what could be like a supplement for small fleets, like a continuation of pirate-fleet list and rules that were on the Spanish website before they destroy it.
That would make more sense in terms of roles and story with armies like space marines, tyranids vanguard fleet, explorator fleet, tau commercial fleet, pirates of any race, inquisition (I don't like the inquisition fleet, in theory black ships travel alone), roque traders...
I think It would add a very attractive way for beginners and veteran players as it would add the option of having smaller games in terms of miniatures(money), time and space.

What do you think? Would you like to have the option of playing BFG in a different scale?

This is the first time I see this material :D, i not bat for ideas. Where did you took it from?

The main idea was more like a bunch of scenatios in with there would be a little bit more of scenery, and with fleets consisting in scorts and maybe a cruiser or light cruiser leading,
It would be good for sub-plots or even  for entire campains.
The idea is for example if you have space marines in warhammer 40k your force for this misions would be just your company, so it would consist in a strike cruiser, some scorts and local ships(not space marines) suporting.
It was something like that, actually the rules were attached just near the roque trader rules and consist in just some little rules that made the scorts a better option rather than a cruiser  and were think in very little combats.

Wrote it myself based on the Rogue Trader book. Zhukov added some things iirc.

It was on the forum as well, feel free to use it.

I LOVE the Khareshi Pirates list. I play these as often as possible as they really operate different than anything in BFG currently.

As far as BFG skirmish, I had discussed with Horizon a few months back about a ruleset called Rogue Trader. Essentially, it is a ruleset for Role Playing in the WH40k universe that also has extensive rules for space combat. My FLGS has the core book with several expansions and was tempted to pick it up just to try it out. I'm still considering it.

Rogue Trader is published by Fantasy Flight Games. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=78

As a long time Rogue Trader myself, I cannot recommend it enough. Although I own and have played Dark Heresy, Deathwatch, Black Crusade and am about to (hopefully) soon receive my copy of Only War, I must say that Rogue Trader offers a really unique and satisfying experience, both as a player and a GM.

Anybody who has played BFG will find many similarities, as BFG is obviously the inspiration for the space combat side of the game. The game is very solid and offers infinite varieties of ships and scenarios, with a single caveat to mention: the game, being a roleplaying, favours the underdog.

In BFG, a fight between a cruiser class vessel and a single escort would be brutally one-sided. In RT, if that player was the escort my money would go unconditionally on the character. If you want a more true to BFG/fluff experience, I would recommend doubling the hull integrity at the very least and using the squadron rules from battlefleet koronus, the ship supplement of the game. You should also consider Into The Storm, which is a variety pack but does contain some very nice ship hulls/components/rules.

Hey, I'm also a fan of RT, having played it for a year or two. I agree with Talos, my escort class ship would ofter one-shot cruiser and heavy cruiser class ships, as did the other escort in out party. The two of us and a mars class battlecruiser survived (read:escaped from) a fight with dozens of Rocs. we were there for several turns.

RPG-favoring aside, it offers a very interesting perspective to ship combat. It also allows you to experience ships that aren't necessarily built for combat. Playing with a smuggling ship and stumbling into a pair of eldar ships is a nasty surprise;) The rest of the game system is also amazing, it does a good job of making you feel like you have all the money (and equipment that goes along with that). Make sure you get a good GM!!! I was fortunate enough to have one, but just like any other RPG it's critical. Make sure they know the setting, but are flexible enough to still allow you to break a couple of laws here and there ;) (I was obcessed with xenos/chaotic knowledge. I didn't flaunt that at the church, but I didn't hide it from my party)
