The aesthetics of base edges are often overlooked.  They very much 'frame' the minis and should - as suggested above - say something about the wider context of the troop types.  I favour gloss enamels, usually black or brown.

I'll stop now as I'm beginning to sound like some sort of pretentious art critic!

I want them to be rocky, snowy, arid, grassy, anything but the 90s GW style of snot green with flock on top. =D

Thumbs up!

Ah, Gorrin, your stuff looks fine, I mean the tone deaf GW studio style from back in the day in White Dwarf.  No matter what colour scheme the model had it had to have that snot green edge. =-P

I colour code bases in SAGA, actually:
Hearthguard: Blue (as in blue blooded elites)
Warriors: Red (as in red blooded warriors eager to prove themselves)
Levies: Green (as in they will run away)
Lord: Purple (as in royal purple) =-P

Nice, can you share a picture of your saga, to see how it works the coloured bases on the battle table?

And they look good and it work, I tend to identify units buy their shield colours or clothing, the peasants have drabber gear.
Some of my units can be 2 Hearthguard one game and one of warriors the next, other than that as Normans they really are wuciwug so I need no further definition.

Finally getting my human realms terrain in order!  Really want to be able to use these to make the table pretty, even if they just act as impassble terrain.

Got to paint them, first. =-P

Been stripping the paint off Lizardmen / Kislev / Chaos / Empire, doing "busy work" the past few days.  Next things that I'll probably finish painting are Chaos dragon ogres (Which I proxy as marauder cavalry) and a 2nd Giant Eagle unit.

Almost finished this test stand!

Couldn't get the blues right on the first try, hopefully following stands will be easier.
