Ghost's Very Hungry Space Caterpillars
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:31:24 PM »
Trying to get my BFG 'Nids out of my system - they've been sitting untouched and largely complete since '07, according to my fleet lists. Some putty, some final assembly, and paint, and they're done.

A couple shots of paint tests - C&C welcome.

Not a fan of the long arms.  I feel they would be better suited as mandibles/jaws.  Personal taste really.

I like the painting and the rest of the shape.  The ordnance is nicely done.  Keep on painting, man!

Those space caterpillars are going to eat through everything!

I like the color choice for the body and the carapace. The claws are nmm? They look good most people do bone and I like that this is different. I would say the only thing I might add would be some of the bright "warning" markings you see on say poisonous animals.

Those are assault boats and fighters??? Lol the red really makes these pop the only problem I would see with these is that your going to have to tell your opponents what they are :P.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

And that's different from the rest of the fleet how?

Hmm, warning markings... maybe get some red on the carapace to offset the cool purple...

Better/worse/indifferent?

Also, some on the other ships:

Cruisers - Assault (Pyro/Claws/Pyro) and Ordinance (Torps/Torps/Pyro)

Escorts - Kraken (Claws) and Escort Drone (Pyro)

Assault Hive Ship (Claws/Pyro/Pyro)

Ordinance Hive Ship (Torps/LB/LB)

Good point :). The warning marks are called aposematism a google search pulled up quite a lot of cool photos on them. The red would look sweet as would orange and yellow to contrast with your base colors.

They look really nice with the red.  Adds a lot to the model!
Very nice work.

Aaand I'm done for the night. I think I'm only going to be scattering in the Waspy markings; most will be the plain carapace. That way the marks add visual interest without getting too busy.

G'night.

Those marks look good, I like the placement on the carapace it makes the layers really stand out. Good work.

I really like the small attention to details you've done here. That's what IHO makes a good model great. Specifically I am digging the green glowing engines (or 'Nid buttholes  :o ewwwww). The split complementary colors you chose (purple - red - yellow green) is a fanastic use of the color wheel! Great job, mate!

Another idea is to expand it out to be a tetradic scheme and leverage just a few oranges in there (perhaps inside some of the recesses?). that's far more difficult to get it right but when you get it right, it's RIGHT. There's a ton of color harmony tools and grafix out there to help out if you're looking to get all the tonalities worked out.
As we Imperials say, "The Emperor [class battleship] Protects..."

Another day, another model.

Escort Drone with Pyro-Acid Battery

Kraken with Massive Claws

Kraken with Pyro-Acid

Group shot.

Jimmy Zimms: Thanks! I have to admit though that you're attributing thought processes that I didn't have. It was more like: "Well, people want wap-like markings. My Ordinance already uses red, I can tie things together that way. Now, let's do engines. What would look alien; can't do Star Destroyer blue or jet Engine red. I know! Green! No self respecting mechanical starship has green exhausts!". Split complemetary colors didn't even cross my mind.
 :P

Incidentally, I have enough parts to make a few more ships, so if there's any interest in a stage by stage, I can do that. Otherwise I'll add when I feel like it.
