BFG Ship Type Acronyms
« on: July 14, 2009, 07:30:22 PM »
What are these acronyms used in some places and where do those come from?

I mean BB, CG, CA, CL, FF, DD... Are there more?

BB - battleship
CG - Grand Cruiser
CA - Cruiser/heavy cruiser
CL - Light Cruiser
FF - Frigate
DD - Destroyer

They come from modern/historical naval parlance, although I am unaware of a real-life "grand cruiser" - in the US Navy, "CG" means "guided missile cruiser."
CV - carrier. I think there may be more for smaller vessels (below frigates), but most of the other acronyms consist of these with 'G' for guided missile-armed or 'N' for nuclear propulsion (eg CVN).

Thanks for reply! Still continuing a bit and asking why these acronyms are used with BFG? Rulebook only has capital ships and escorts so these probably do not have any meaning rules wise?

Well, for fleet selection, the lists go by battleships, grand cruisers, heavy cruisers, cruisers, and escorts (in various combinations depending on the fleet). So the classes have official meanings. But you're right, the acronyms don't have any official role in the rules, as far as I can tell. They just make the various classes easier to discuss/reference/type.

These designations are used since it is indeed easy to identify and such and not much to type.
