[BFG] Commission: Zeus Destroyer
« on: October 01, 2011, 07:39:49 AM »
Hi guys, I just wanted to share a commission project I'm in the finishing stages of: It's a torpedo destroyer in the same style as the other Zeus prows and ships I have done, as a commission for a client in the UK. He's wanting quite a few of them so I'll be casting the master model up. The model itself is quite tiny at only 30mm long, but has a very high level of detailing (more than the GW Cobra model if I say so myself!).

The master model was slowly built over the course of a couple of weeks, almost entirely from extruded styrene. The only other material was some putty for the prow. For best results casting (and to prevent having any gates damaging details) I decided to break the model into two pieces, with the prow and hull separate. Add the two turrets (which I made separate so that there could be a little bit of variation between the models) and that makes it a four piece model. I went with the usual single part split mould for this one, with all of the parts together on one tiny sprue. There's actually more resin used up in the sprue block than there is in the model itself!

And here we have shots of the finished product:

Overall I'm extremely happy with how the project turned out, and it certainly gives me the motivation I'll need to do a Frigate sized variant at the bequest of the same client later...

Now they look awesome. Do you think you'll make them available for people to buy in the future? I think they'd look good as part of my rogue trader fleet  :P I especially like the rear of the ship you've built up from scratch.

But yeah, good stuff. I'd very much like to see more.

Yes these are nice, altho I never cared for that prow style. Would there maybe be a chance of getting these from you tho? Possibly without the prows :P.

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Thanks guys!

Pembo; I didn't document much of the build process on this one. You can see a couple of WIP shots on my site (Resin Addict).

Andrew; you must be the first person I've heard who doesn't like that prow style! I love it and in fact the client I did this for wants his entire fleet like that! Each to their own I suppose!

I enjoy the diversity it affords, but find that it comes off as a more "cartoon" or plush look. Almost like the big eyed pokemon bfg :D. At any rate they look awesome as with the other Zeus ships.

I assume this means you will be making cruiser and battleship molds (I've only seen your light cruisers before so Idk if these exist already). I would also like to see how some swords/firestorms will come out as it would be interesting to see how this would be accomplished (stretch zeus prow hum...).

Nah I just did alternative prows to use on cruisers (http://www.resinaddict.com/blog/2010/02/personal-project-zeus-prows/), and there's no point doing anything battleship sized as an Apocalypse Battleship can be converted simply enough.

Originally I was going to do a set of prows for sword/firestorm frigates for the client, but a photoshop showed that it just doesn't look right. So he wants me to do a full custom frigate sized ship, which I probably won't get around to until the new year...
