Rogue Trader Fleet /Compendium 2010
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:45:43 AM »
So................ I tried to build a fleet from the 2010 compendium set for Rogue Traders.

First of all, and this issue seems to be in more 2010 lists (see Sigoroth's go on the Ork fleet) is the kinda muddled fleet building and awkward wording at places. I mean, the version we did in Warp Rift 17 is more clear on the matter.

I went by the models I have so far kitbashed, got, converted:

1* Veteran Rogue Trader --- 50pts

Cruisers
1* RT Endeavour CL + crew skill + chosen xenos system --- 141pts
1* RT Endeavour CL + xenos system --- 125pts
1* Lunar Class + crew skill + xenos systen --- 218,5pts

RT Escort Squadron One
2* Recommissioned Escorts + 3* Iconoclast Destroyers --- 150pts

RT Escort Squadron Two
3* Castellan Class Frigates [Auxilary] --- 150pts

RT Escort Squadron Three
6* Xenos Raiders  --- 300pts

Cargo Squadrons
3* Cargo Transports type 1 --- 30pts
3* Cargo Transports type 1 --- 30pts
2* Cargo Transports type 1 --- 20pts
2* Cargo Transports type 1 --- 20pts
2* Heavy Transports --- 80pts
3* Fast Clippers --- 60pts

Allies
1* Tau Emissary (launch bay variant) --- 125pts

Total = 1499,5 pts

I will go down so hard versus ordnance...

Which brings me to the point I need some of these:
--- Escort Carriers (about 3 at least)
--- A reserve vessel with launch bays (Demiurg?)
--- Play below 1000pts to reduce the risks of opponents ordnance swarms haha

On paper it looks cool I think but in the battle I be at the downside.

I guess the list is more suited to the scenarios attached to the pdf.

Not sure a rogue trader should have carriers beyond reserve

Is there a xenos option for more turrets? Or better turrets (rerolls perhaps)

So, only 1 real cruiser in the entire fleet? Yeah, you're toast. One line cruiser, 3 CLs, 14 escorts and 15 transports does not inspire much confidence. I would add a Stronghold. I assume that you're only going to use this fleet in scenarios that utilise transports yes? If not, there doesn't seem to be much point in making your RT cargo vessels fast clippers. 3 WBs isn't much, but at least it's 30cm range and without it they'd be unarmed, making them merely meat shields.

Yeah, a Stronghold would be a good. Or at least an IN Dictator as a reserve. Something beefy with launch bays. Really restrictive the list for competitive play. And I think unsuited above 1000pts, but under 1000pts reserves become harder to get.

I think what I can come up with using the first list in the pdf. Adding Rogue Traders to my Imperial Navy, Tau or AdMech. It will still be more of a fluffy thing then powerplay I guess. Unless I upgrade some neat escorts with a second shield.
Tau CPF could have use for it I think. A big RT cruiser, turn upgrade so it can keep up with the Emissaries and Protectors. Plus an attendant squadron.

All-right--

As part of a Tau fleet, Rogue Trader maximized. I think it is fluffy. Trader + Tau Envoy meeting/trading needing to act together.

Kor'el + Aun'el --- 75pts (Ld8 + 2 re-roll)
1* Emissary Class (gunnery variant + prow deflector) --- 120pts
2* Protector Class --- 370pts
3* Castellan Class --- 150pts

Veteran Rogue Trader --- 50pts (Ld 9 + 1 re-roll)
1* Endeavour Class [crew skill + chosen xenos system] --- 141pts
3* Xenos Class --- 150pts
1* Lunar Class [xenos system] --- 210pts
2* Recommissioned + 1* Iconoclast --- 90pts
3* Cargo Transport --- 30pts
5* Armed Freighter/RT Cargo --- 100pts

Total 1486pts

This fleet will give me needed AC coverage with a good amount of missiles and torpedoes. If I drop one Rogue Trader cruiser with attendant squadron I would be able to upgrade the Emissary to a Custodian + Wardens, but that is less fluffy.
I think this RT list allows for a better fleet build then the exploration list. The Exploration list has the same restrictions yet gaining nothing special.

How in the world did you put that second fleet together? Both RT lists frevent that list from happening. If your attaching a RT to an existing fleet, you need 750pts of fleet to get one RT cruiser. In the Exploration fleet, you need three RT cruisers to get one allied (in this case) Tau cruiser.

?
1500pts = 2 x 750pts of fleet = 2 rogue trader cruisers.

"Tau, Demiurg, and Imperial fleets may include one Rogue Trader cruiser for every 750 points or part thereof in your fleet."

I have interpreted that as meaning:
0-750 points of Tau ships/characters, you may pick one Rogue Trader cruiser and it's escorts.
751-1500 points of Tau ships/characters, you may pick two Rogue Trader cruisers and it's escorts.

In the fleet you have listed, you have only 715 points of Tau ships/characters.

P.S. What happened to the update to the Kroot Warsphere rules? Did we decide not to do them after all? I remember seeing rules for a Warsphere where for a certain number of points, you had a variety of upgrades you could take.

Ah so, Like I said in the first post: the compendium pdf's suffer from really bad wording.

I took it as the Battle Barge for Marine: you can take one per 1000pts, thus 2 in 1500pts.
Rogue Trader one per 750pts, thus 2 in 1500pts.

Kroot sphere rules are in the Tau CPF pdf.

Hmm... now you even have me wondering... The wording is exactly the same, just substituting the names of those involved and the price amounts....

However, the thing to think about is this is a Tau fleet with allied Rogue Trader vessels. If it was the other way around, we would be using the Exploration list. So I think it's kind of silly to have the Rogue Traders outnumbering the "real" fleet they are attached to when they are only supposed to be allies. That's just my opinion though. To stay consistent with the wording of similar rules in place though, I would say the fleet you made is legal?

P.S. Somehow when I was looking for the Kroot rules, I missed them three times! LOL! Got 'em now, thank you.

The problem is that in the exploration list you need 3 Rogue Trader cruisers to get 1 Tau (or other allies) cruiser. So that is frigged as well.

I'm sure in most friendly game people wouldn't complain about the tau to rogue trader ratio. I think the list is very good and fluffy, however if it was me I would include a battleship such as a Tau Explorer or Custodian to make up for the lack of capital ships in the rogue trader fleet.  :)

Explorer + Merchants might be a fluffy option. 8 AC is good coverance.

But I only have FW models and one modified Explorer, so well, I go with the aun on the Emissary. ;)

All right, pirate fleet:

3 Pirates + maxed out re-rolls (total of 9 re-rolls, lol) --- 300pts
Strike Cruiser --- 145pts
6* Swords --- 210pts
Carnage cruiser --- 180pts
3* Escort Carriers --- 180pts
Gothic Cruiser --- 180pts
6* Swords --- 210pts
3* Cobra destroyers --- 90pts

1495pts total.

Has AC cover. Good amount of batteries. You are forced to take lots of Swords (best choice) as for the fact battery escorts must outnumber lance+ordnance escorts.

Looks good, not including any Fra'al Battleships? If I ran a pirate fleet I know I would...
