What gaming surface do you use?
« on: June 14, 2009, 05:41:48 PM »
Hi. I was just wondering what type of gaming surfaces do you use for playing? I was searching high and low for some kind of a mat, that i can just roll over and put away after playing. Becouse unfortuanetly I don't have enough space for painted boards and stuff  :-\  Does anyone know any industry that makes those? I found some shops online but their products weren't that good. Or if anybody know a good way to make one at home I would be more than pleased to hear. But I would really avoid playing on a cloth with paint dots, i really need something better  :P I started experimenting with linoleum sheets lately, they are pretty good till it comes to rolling them up and putting them away. It's hard to make them flat again after that.

I'm not speaking from experience but couldn't you cut the lino into strips and then use black gaffer tape to hold them together. For storage I guess you'd have to alternate which side you taped for every crease.

Not as good as a board, but I can't really think of a better solution than cloth.

Cheers,

No affiliation, haven't tried them... but it sounds like a wargamer who made the effort to answer your question.

currently i use the GW battle matt
one side is grass green, but the back side is matt black. it has enough weight to it to make it lies nicely. and it can be folded up.

but i am particularly interested if anyone has use poster print (4' x 6') with an astrographic star field on it.

Thx for the ideas. The Hotzmats look good, but they seem to be out of stock for now. Maby buying a GW matt and playing on a black side is a pretty good idea...
As for cutting lino and tapping it together  i think it's too much of a craft-project  ;)

You have to tell them about the transducers mounted on the bottom for "visceral" explosions!!!

I use 25cmx25cm tiles I created in photoshop, printed onto paper and glued to foarcore. Makes for a great modular board that takes up very little space.

don't you worry that using modular boards in cm make it easier to estimate ranges?

We use what ever is awailable at the time and place we meet to play (ranges from raw table surface abd ping pong table to black painted plates or black table cloth especially bought for this purpose).

I don´t see easier estimating ranges becomeing a problem in a game where I am allowed to measure anything at any given time ...

Not at all, in fact I have tic marks on them so that all ranges are marked in 12.5cm intervals so anyone can figure out approximate range from the tiles... it levels the playing field. Along those lines, since nothing in BFG prohibits premeasuring I see no reason why I should worry about being able to determine approximate ranges from the tiles. In fact it helps speed up games when you can tell at a glance if something is in range or not.
