Space Billiard - Ork Rok questions
« on: February 08, 2011, 03:22:52 AM »
I'm considering an all Rok Ork Fleet* and wanted to ask if Roks can take the Turrets and Boarding Torpedo options as mentioned in the FAQ (presumably for the capital ship cost)?

*Yes, I am lazy and will just glue stones to stands and add some bits.

Awesome. Rok fleets are always fun, although you'll find little tactics in playing them and will have a difficult time against long ranged opponents.

Boarding torps aren't worth it. Never buy them. The turrets are decent, but you really don't need them if you have a hulk, and you always take a hulk if able.

Iirc you can purchase the 'Maniac turrets' on any ship in your warbosses squadron, so if you have a squadron of Roks with a warboss on one, then you can get maniac turrets for all of them. I wouldn't take the +2 turret option, as it is way too expensive for a Rok. Hell... it is even hard to consider putting it on a Kroozer.

Thanks for the feedback. It is clearly a fun fleet and mostly something to spend the time until my Chaos Fleet arrives (and will pay back for all that long range fire ;) )

I'm not totally sure if the Maniac Turrets upgrade would work for all of them, as it's only Escorts where each ship has to take the upgrade. Which sort of ties into the original question, if Roks can take capital ship options, cscort options or neighter.

And I'm using the Armaggedun list for now, until the Draft has matured.

But if the "upgrade the whole" Squadron way works I'd probably go with Big Boostas and Evil Sunz for some speedy bit's of astronomical landscape. ;)

I'm pretty sure you have to upgrade each ship to get the advantage.... quite costly in the end.

Sorry, I'm really the only serious Ork player around, and I'm not too much a fan of that document. So there hasn't been much input for it other than 'Orks shouldn't have this' or 'Everything costs too much' etc.

I honestly greatly prefer the 'Waagh!' type list. The Clanz document is an attempt to make retroactive fixes on the Ork problems, rather than fixing the initial cause of them.

Escorts shouldn't be forced to be taken, in the case of Orks they should be good enough so that one would prefer them over Kroozers.

Also there is the retroactive fix of making warlords free, which is supposed to affect the overall cost of ships by making them relatively cheaper. Then upgrades to take things like lances... ugh...

Problem is that the HA can't (or won't) change a lot of things in the rules that are rather necessary to balance fleets, make the rules more noob-friendly and less like pulling a stick through mud to figure out. Not that they are bad guys, it's just what happens when GW is very touchy with what they are doing.

Sorry about the pseudo-rant. I'm head of the fan-group that is writing a revised version of Gothic.

No problem, it's always good to know what people are currently working on and waht current opinons by active players are. That was the point of asking :)

I wasn't aware of a specific Waaagh fleet list, is that the one found in the files in your sig? I missed that until now.

I currently have the following:
- GW Ork Pirate List in the basic book
- GW 3rd Armageddon War, Ork Waaagh list
- Ork Clans Draft
- Flawed Ships Ork list from your sig.

Any others other there that are considered official/accepted?

You are going to have a VERY good time with this fleet! I own 12 Roks and love them!

I'm a bit of a loon when it comes to painting. Each one of my roks starts out with a (duh) rock, some being washed up pieces of coral and othr being the lava rocks you can find in home improvement stores. I then lavish them with bits and escort pieces (one actually has a whole Brute on it!), and they all have cool paint jobs with lots of carefully-painted checkers and ork glyphs.

I promise to post pics as soon as I take some.

Oh! on Nate's note. Lava rocks can get heavy, which can cause problems with bases. What I did was buy some syrofoam balls (about $4 for 6 reasonably sized ones) Then took random 40k bits, cut them up so they didn't look like what they were originally, and glued them to the ball. Make sure to use PVA glue (elmers) as super glue will melt styrofoam.

Gore out craters in the balls, and try to make them as irregular as possible. It's usually better to paint them before gluing on the bits, (and painting the bits seperately) but it depends on how much you care.

Plasticard and small pipes go a long way when making your own 'vessels' so it's worth investing in those as well.

And the list from my Sig, was the first one that I built, back when I was still learning how to use photoshop. It has a few errors, and will look somewhat different in its final version. Although its rules are playable and work fine. Unfortunately other fleets met higher priority, and we're working on the main rules currently, so it probably won't see an update for a month or so.

The Adepticon Ringer Fleet IF it's needed (which right now it isn't because the event is sold out) is going to be a Rok fleet + 1 Kroozer since my fleet construction rules require at least ONE capital ship for one of the scenarios.  Should be amusing.

Sorry, I'm really the only serious Ork player around

Hi Plaxor  ;)

Personally, I don't own any Rok's (eventually I will) but never really liked them stat wise. I prefer more mobile forces. But they would be a hoot to play with and against.

Sup Zhukov.  :P

Roks are fun. Not a particularly good fleet, but they're fun.

I got a Rock!

... Fleet. An octet, a terrorship and a couple of escorts to fill points. I used to terrorize the local Eldar players with it, good times, good times.

Built it functionally for free with left over materials from other projects. Once I'd made the half mould of a weapon battery making the gun decks my spare styrofoam is festooned with was a matter of pressing the spare green stuff in the form, and there's always spare green stuff.  ;)
