Discussing the Ork Hulk
« on: December 26, 2010, 06:03:44 AM »
This has been bothering me for a bit.

I understand the Hulk has been around awhile.  But some things I just find unreasonable about the thing.  I realize that Ork Hulks are more weaponized and militarized than the average floating hunk of rock, but I still don't see the entirety being covered in gunz like a warship would be.  The following issues:

The Orks manage to maintain 4 lances on the thing.  Twice as much and 50% further reaching than those found on the Slamblasta, a singular miracle of Orkish maitenance.

Turret value of 6.  You are telling me that on that massive thing, with so much bare rock and derelict vessels, the race that is notorious for forgetting to set out adequate turret defence has managed to muster a turret density of 6?

Shield value of 3.  This thing manages to maintain a higher shield strength than Orks can fit on their battleships across the entirety of the vessel?

I'm thinking with this PDF, the Hulk could use some tweaking.

that seems simple: lower shields, lower guns, lower turrets, lower points. that'll make it easier to field and disrupt the problem of ork players having to choose between Hulk or Kroozer spam (and the force build around those styles). playtesting necessary though.

LS,

I realize that Ork Hulks are more weaponized and militarized than the average floating hunk of rock

Understatement ;)

The Orks manage to maintain 4 lances on the thing.  Twice as much and 50% further reaching than those found on the Slamblasta, a singular miracle of Orkish maitenance.

Well if you look at the original model, a Ork Hulk will usually comprise of many many ships of all sizes. I think if you were to throw together 5-6 cruisers and 1-3 BB's along with escorts and such, 4 Lances is reasonable. The Slambasta is just ONE ship.

Turret value of 6.  You are telling me that on that massive thing, with so much bare rock and derelict vessels, the race that is notorious for forgetting to set out adequate turret defence has managed to muster a turret density of 6?

"so much bare rock" <-- depends on the model your looking at ;) In all seriousness though, I feel they have the correct amount of turrets. This race prizes Hulks above EVERYTHING else IMO and they probably throw so many gunz and other crap onto it that it's probably not easy to attack at all.

Shield value of 3.  This thing manages to maintain a higher shield strength than Orks can fit on their battleships across the entirety of the vessel?

Um... yeah! See above argument on how many ships a Hulk may have inside of it.....

Just remember, this is MORE than THREE times the size of a BB! It HAS to be that good. Otherwise, who would spend the $$ and points to use it?

I think it's rich that people want to weaken one of the least viable fleets in the game even further.

These are -orks-

NOTHING about them has to make sense, so long as THEY believe in it.

I've never noticed Hulk Spam - and at 600pts I would expect it to be well armed/defended.

Why change it, I see no need. Changing something just for the sake of change is pretty pointless.

That only goes so far Zelnik, there are obvious things that are well beyond their grasp.

Tinfish:  The change was proposed because the current Hulk is does not fit the race.

No need to change the Hulk. At all.
The current Hulk is Ork-y enough.

The Hulk itself is ok.

There is just one thing:
At the Moment the Hulk can not be crippled. But for victory points he should be counted like being crippled when reduced to 20 HP or less I think.

I play Orks myself most of the time and it is to hard for any opponent when the Hulk leaves play over the edge with about 3 HP left and he earns 10 % VP only ...
