[WM] doubleclickhere's warmaster projects
« on: September 29, 2010, 05:23:05 PM »
I opened this thread to post my new work in one place. My army threads in the painters tale got too confusing the more armys I started to paint. For tonights battle for the worldwide wm campaign I painted the high elf dragon and a bolt thrower unit. Let's kick some dwarves butt!

Nice work, the images are a little dark though :(
I can't remember whose empire you are in, but make sure you stomp on those dwarves :)

The dragon seems awsome! a little dark to enjoy the details. Good luck in your battle!

Yes you are both right. I hear this not for the first time. I was to lazy to get another lamp from my home office room. Everytime I have to unplug the lamp and fiddle the cord behind the desk. I hope I remember your comments next time to give me the will to handle the cable and get better results....  :) Thanks for the feedback!

The last few weeks I finished more minis completing my undead army for the moment. The new units increase my armysize to about 2.4k.

9 Skeletons
6 Archers
3 Chariots
4 Cavalry
1 Sphinx
1 Bone Giant
2 Carrions
2 Skull Chukkas
2 units of Bone Throwers
1 Tomb King
4 Liche Priest
1 Liche Priest on a dragon

With the latest painted units I tried gloss and then matte varnish instead of only matte to make the paint job more durable as I heard. Now I'm not happy with the glossy look. You can specially see it on the red bone giant parts and on the infantry banners. I used only a "thin" (whatever that means) coat of vallejo gloss varnish followed by two matte layers of vallejo/gw. All varnish was brushed on (I'll never use a spray can again. That killed 10 units of high elves) and diluted about 50/50 with water. How can I get rid of the glossy look? I also tried undiluted matte varnish to kill the shine. Can anybody help me please?
Here are the pics.

Very nice army! The gloss actually doesnt look that bad on the pics.

Will we see the undead at the eurogt or will it be the high elves?

Great work, loving the dragon and bone giant especially.
As for the shire, I always use dullcote spray and I am very choosy about the days I spray.
Like you I lost a load of high elves to a damp day :(

I use Mattlock Marabu and it is really good.

As far as I know (I did it and works for me) --> apply mat vanish over the shiny figure and the shines disapear. I understand that you try this before... and did not work. mmmh maybe try again?

Thank you guys for the comments. I'll google for the Mattlock Marabu and see if I can get further advice somewhere. It's just a matter of taste I guess and I don't like the wet look. I hoped I could kill that with matte varnish. Next time I just skip the gloss step.

@Guthwine:

I'm still undecided. The undead are my new army but my heart is still beating for the high elves. I love the high elf theme and the sculpts are so beautiful. And don't say I want to compensate my lack of skill with the Ld10 General.  ;D

if you try matlock, tell us your experience. (I also dislike the shine look, and every time I varnish I do it with some uneasy felling)

Some more yellowish pictures. But this time I used two lamps. It must be the camera I guess.  :)
Soon I don't have to fear broken spear tips anymore.

This time I didn't use any gloss varnish but even more matte layers.  ;)  I think I'll stick to that procedure as I'm happier with the matte result and don't have the will to experiment with new varnishes.
