EuroGT Battle Reports - Lex
« on: March 17, 2010, 11:05:52 AM »
Having press-ganged Master.Petz into producing his battle-reports I feel at least obliged to produce my own as well  8)

Have Dwarves, will travel.
EuroGT army composition rules are set-up so that the various scenarios fought (based upon the team-orders taken) can be fought at different point-values. To facilitate you pick 3 "banners"

Banner 1    - 1200 pts / 2k min/max
Banner 2/3 - 400 pts each +/- 10 pts
Combined forces should be 2000 pts or less, may include max 50 pts of Magic Items.

Battles will always at least allow you to field the core-army = banner 1.

Banner 1
General, Hero, Runesmith (with the 10 pts anvil IF all 3 banners are fielded)
6 units of warriors, 2 of rangers

Banner 2
2 gyros, 2 units of handgunners and my trollslayers

Banner 3
One more unit of warriors and 2 more rangers, including some Magic Items to fill up the points, With all 3 banners fielded the BP will be 8, and I could take a Flame Cannon to bring it to 9 instead of the Magic Items, but I aim to move around quick and the FC will slow me down.

Game Time

Game 1 - Skaven, Peter aka Master.Petz

Master Petz beautifulle painted Skaven took  a severe beating. The dwarves where defending their homes
,
which meant that the Skaven had to take 1-3 objectives on my side of the table to score bonus VP. Whilst the advance of the bulk of his forces stalled on their right flank, a stallwart band of trollslayers trotted round the bottom of the hill which defined the centre of the table and, with a little help of some warriors, chewed through several ratswarms and a warp lightning cannon for the loss of just a single slayer stand.
Meanwhile in the centre of the table the bulk of the dwarven warriors saw of some Stormvermin and Ratogres effectivly sealing the fate of the rats.
Overall result: WIN  - one dead stand of trollslayers, six and two-half dead units of Skaven

Game 2 - Dark Elves, Stefan Schindler - I am not sure if he lurks around here

The Dark Elves of Stefan proved a tough nut to crack. The overeager slayers (after their succes of the previous game) got a nice charge down the middle smacking into the artillery brigade of the elves. Making both contact with the RBT and a unit of crossbowelves they became overconfident and allocated all attacks on the later. Alas, instead of easily taking the boltthrowers, they bounced of the infantry and where subsequently made into pincushions.
With both of us rapidly moving towards BP this proved to be a fatal error, harsh fighting saw both elves and dwarfs dying in droves and a last round charge by two units of coldones proved to be my undoing. While he was about 2 units away from BP, that charge took out 2 units of warriors and one of rangers sealing my fate. Kudos for Stefan for playing a solid game and some briljant manouvering to get that last charge in!

Overall result: BP Loss  - 8 units of deaddwarfs for 620 pts, 460 pts of dead elves

Game 3 - Dwarfs, Markus aka ??

Dwarven Civil War! (Well at least the players stayed civil) having talked shop with Markus earlier on the day, before the start of the event, I ended up playing a shooty dwarven set-up. Knowing this was not going to be an easy fight, when gettin initiative I gave it to Markus, assuming he would move his Artillery into position and thus allowing me to see the best avenue of attack. Allas, everything BUT his artillery moved, and then sum!!  putting his forces squarly into the terrain I had planned to use to shield me from his shooting. From there one it was a prety hopeless strugle, did you ever try to pry a Dwarf from under a rock  [B)]

Overall result: Loss  - 690 points of dead dwarfs on MY side, Markus only lost about 255 pts

END OF DAY !  1 for 3   well, I have had better days, and I at least know I would have had a fighting chance in both the fights lost, if only I could have avoided the Real Stupid Mistakes

Game 4 - Bretonians, Gerald aka spiritusXmachina

With our opponents known after dinner on saterday, Gerald and I agreed to start early (8:00 instead of the 9:ish start planned). We have played against each other almost every EuroGT for the last 8 years, and are well aware of playing style etc. Previous games tended to see 4 or 5 turns of dancing around the field like may-fest maidens before comming to grips and we have had battles end on the results of a single fight !!  Not this time !! Gerald is also one of the members of the Warmaster Playtest Team, where he champions the Bretonian army, so when he asked if it was OK to field the Grail Pilgrims I agreed, being keen to see them in action.
Predictably we both moved out, with my dwarves gettin a leg-up on the horseboys and establishing some nice positions, making inroads on the Bretonian side of the table. With my right flank swinging around to launch the trollslayers on the 4 unit strong brigade of Grail Pilgrims, and after seeing of some knights that where forced to charge uphill into Ranger positions, I managed to park a gyro to the back of a unit of knights, shoot at the Peggy's and charge in rangers and warriors on the tin-boy contingent on his left flank, taking out 2 units of knights. Accumulating losses he could not manage to redeem in his final round.

Overall result: WIN  - 420 pts of dwarfs, 525 pts of bretonians, including iirc 2 and a half units of knights

"

Game 5 - High Elves, Ian
I have been playing Ian at earlier EuroGT's and he is turning into a prety decent gamer, so I knew I was in for a tough fight. Luck did favour me, as I (again) gained initiative and started marching towards the ridges on my left flank, gettin the jump on the Elfs, who botched several commands in the first couple of turns, allowing me to move onto his side of the table and in position to pick the fights where I wanted them. Also, the first round saw the gyros both whirling into action to shoot the Eagles of the table, never to return. One of them subsequently found its demise when being charge by a unit of chariots, but the other got away and played a large roll in containing the elves right flank.
With the woods seperating the two halves of his army infested with my Dwarves I managed to chew my way through enough points of elves to clinch the game in my favour.

Overall result: WIN  - 460 pts of dwarfs, 610 pts of high elves

Some pictures of the 5th game:

Dwarven deployment-formation Omega.
Note the Trollslayers actual are facing TOWARDS the camera

Nasty Silverhelm charge incomming !!

Final charge of the game, the chariots bounced of the defended rangers

Post game overview. The long ridge on the left of the table is lined with shooters, and the combination of Gyrocopter and Handgunner shooting ate away his reavers piecemeal, causing so much confusion that his entire attack up that flank stalled completly.

Hmm.  Your backward-facing trollslayers tickle my memory: something about the way the Zulu reserve (the "loins") would sit down facing away from the battle until they were committed.

You can change the size of the photos by messing with see s144 part:

s640 or s800 works good in the forums.

Looks like it was a good time. Got a link to any of the scenarios played?

Great report, an insight into the power of the vertically challenged Dwarfs.

I have to ask and will probably regret it, but what are Dwarves doing with an ancient relic of a time piece like an EGG TIMER?   ;D
