EuroGT Skaven Battle Reports
« on: March 15, 2010, 11:23:56 PM »
So as promised here the battle reports from Skaven. I just want to add that my exp. playing Warmaster is quite little so please forgive me if I did noob-ish mistakes :P

1 Game Vs Lex (dwarfs without cannons!!)

He had to "defend his home" which means that the attacker (me) has to hold 3 objectives (at 2000 pts) that almost lie in the deploiment zone of the defender.
I got the first turn and made 2 brigades ... also the first few orders went well, which took me to this situation:

Also his orders went well and so our armies were facing on the hill again, the rest of his warriors and rangers (handgunners?) held the points (in the wood and field).
My next turn was quite normal: splitting from the main-brigade and attacking with the Rat Ogres and putting some Stormvermin into support. I also got greedy and tried some nasty orders on another Stormvermin + Plague Monk brigade but they just had a nap in front of the wood ;)

His S&S went bad and I was about to fail most rolls on the combat phase :D ... his dwarfs won the battle and confused my Ogres.
After that his 2nd turn was about to begin and he made quite much initiative moves. Charged my confused Rat Ogres and also the other brigade (the shooty-one) with Slayers and some warriors. He didn't manage to make a hit on the supporting Rat Swarms, but he didn't need to :D
The Rat Swarms did manage to bite out a stand of Slayers and were quite brave (or many) enough to win this battle (I think so at least). The warriors slayed the other Rat Swarm Unit, advanced in the nearby Warplightning Cannon and the fell back.
Other dwarf warriors woke up my sleeping Stormvermin+Plague Monk brigade and managed to kill them (ye, they were very bad positioned ... my greed :( ).
Some pics of this desaster:

Too bad I'm such a slow player we had to stop the battle after this (I dont know if I dropped a turn now but it ended in a mess). There was no need for calculating victory pts bec. he held 2 of 3 markers (each 150 v.pts) and I didnt kill a single unit (while he was quite like eating through them.

This game was quite fun bec. Lex was telling me so much badass tactics about Skaven - couldn't wait to use them all in the next few games :D

2nd game Vs Ian (High Elves - with much Kav.)

I was facing quite a hard list there bec. he was playing very much Kav. The scenario to be played was pitched battle, so nothing special here.
I had the first turn, again made 2 brigades (a shooty one and the big one). Managed to get out 2 units of Gutter Runners, just for giving him the -1 on his cmd penalty for enemy units within 20cm.

Therefore he didn't manage to give much orders in his first turn. But this wasn't even quite necessary bec. he lined up his Reavers and at least got 1 order on his other brigades.
My turn again and I slipped forward with the incredible masses of my big brigade. Too bad the shooty one didn't get the general's order (he usually rolls 11 on 2d6) and just kept looking at what was happening. My gutter runners didn't do much but this was quite enough :)

His turn: He charged the gutter runner with his spearmen and some Rat Swarms (big brigade).

He slayed the Gutter Runners quite fast but bounced off the Rat Swarms :D (I love this game)

My turn: First the Rat Swarms charged on initiative on the reevers and then very important orders were given by my highly potent "Heroes" and so I managed to get an mass of my force into battle with those chariots (even with a step through terrain). Also Gutter Runners came out of nowhere and managed to flank his Kav. brigade.

Again the grey seer (general) rolled an 11 on the shooty brigade.
This huge battle again ended up quite in a mess. He slayed one unit after the other while smiling into my face :P Sure he did take casualties too and after a bloody battle the battlefield endet up like this:

But my Rat Ogres didn't get enough and slayed the rest of his Kav. without loosing a single stand.
My Rat Swarms also fought brave and eat those nasty Reavers ... after that they have had enough and fell back into the brigade

Now - I have to apologize - I don't remember everything quite good. The only thing I know is, that he managed to get another unit of Reavers into my big brigade but bounced off again and got eaten.
In the end noone broke the enemy army but the skaven have eaten enough Kav. to score more VPts than the High Elves.
Victory was mine and I sacrificed some dice to the horned rat.
______

Ok, getting you out of Warmaster battles now - it's getting quite late here (00.30 am) and I have to sleep too (although I'm half a rat ;)). Will continue this battle reports tomorrow.

Hang on.
Greetings,
Peter

Very nice reports and very nice pics!

Never seen pics of a battle with Rats, and for what I see in the picture it has to be very dificult to beat them!

It is only a pic, but this brigade freeze my blood and I would not know what to do against it  :'(

regards!

Great report.
Looking forward to the next one.
I find taking very brief notes and lots of pics helps with remembering what went on :)

Ok, slept enough. Good that I've got a free day today :)
It continues with

3rd game Vs Undead
We made a 1600 pts game bec our head were about to explode after concentrating that much on playing and of course on that amounts of trash talk :D
I was facing some very nice painted skulls and bones ... my advantage was that my opponent has never played against Skaven before and I had to explain what my units do. We played a pitched battle and our deploiment took quite long bec. of those masses :D I decided to do what I can do best: Make it big (the brigade).

He had the first turn and rolled far too high to get those frontline of bow-skeletons moving. So he decided to skip the other orders as well and it was quite about me to have the first turn. I did what should be done and moved in a quite better position to avoid flanking by any of his chariots or other hard hitters. Spread my front and sent a hero far away for upcoming Gutter Runner orders.

On his turn he failed to move his archers again but this time he didn't stop giving orders and sent his chariots on a journey. Also one of his Skeleton brigades moved a bit forward. The rest of his army still stood in the deploiment zone.
My turn again and suddenly sneaking Gutter Runners appeared in the flank of his chariots. They managed to charge them there and eat 2 of his units, then they fell back into the wood, still in the flank of his skeleton brigade. Also I seperated some Rat Swarms and put them into the woods just in case I have to flank an attacking enemy unit. The order on my main brigade failed and so my left flank wasnt covered by Rat Swarms again (but no problem because I usually keep a unit of Rat Ogres and some Plague Monks on the edge of my brigade ... on an enemy flanking attack there are still 9 Rat Ogres attacks and also 12 Plague Monks attacks). It all looked like this then:

His turn again and this time his bones moved forward quite fast. Attacking the Gutter Runners with his skeletons and some Rat Swarms with his flyers. The Gutter Runners were defendet and also fought quite brave. Lucky me they won the battle in the woods but didn't pursuit. The flying unit got some support by some summoned skeletons and finally they both ate 1 unit of Rat Swarms but also didn't pursuit and fell back.

My turn: Charging those nasty Skeletons with my Gutter Runners and a Rat Swarm using my initiative move. The Rat Swarms on the big brigade evaded from the enemy, so the Rat Ogres could easily get in contact with the summoned Skeletons by using their initiative. Orders put the big brigade a nice step closer to the enemy but too bad those plague monks weren't in the control range any more and had to stay behind. I also managed to get those Rat Ogres supported by some Rat Swarms. Just to be sure I put another unit of Gutter Runners in a quite flanky position. Magic was quite nice, I managed to give those Gutter Runners (the ones who were fighting the skeleton brigade) some death frenzy - too bad i rolled 2 times 2 - so those 2 attacks went against them.

Those Rat Ogres fought bad. Although they crushed the skeletons, they didn't manage to get the flyers and also lost one stand. No problem for me because the Rat Swarms and Gutter Runners on the top fought double-brave and killed 2 units of skeletons, then they fell back into terrain again.

His turn - and the turn I made the biggest mistake (and I'll never do again!!)
His flyers could get into the flank of my Stormvermin (his flyers are monsters + charging in the open). I had to attach my general (grey seer) into a unit and chose the Rat Ogres (bec. many hits, good save). Too bad he could charge those with some Chariots and even made his general do his +1 attack-thing for his chariot unit. Although they fought brave, they lost the battle and he got my general. That was pretty bad for me becuase the game was running quite good for me :(
Finally we ended in a draw bec. I even got pretty much more points from his units than he got from mine.

So you see - my gaming experience isn't the best ;) But it still was a great game (bec. it was mass-army VS mass-army).

These were the first 3 games from the first day. On the 2nd day there were only 2 games planned.
So 2nd day and

4th game Vs Daemons - I was defending my home, he attacked
The markers for definding my home were quite far away from each other so I had to split my forces. We were playing 1600 pts and I made a quite big brigade and a small one with some Rat Swarms and elite units like Rat Ogres and Stormvermin (and a unit of Clanrats). His first turn wasn't very good bec. he didn't manage to give many orders.
I just made 1 order on the big brigade and another one on the small one. Again, characters were moving into good positions for Gutter Runner orders but I didn't let them pop out now.

2nd turn of the Daemon player wasn't even better - only 1 order on a daemon infantry brigade was issued, the rest stood still again. My turn again and I was able to eat a unit of his swarms. After that I fell back into the terrain bec. of 2 missing stands of the clanrats and several wounds on the Rat Ogres.
The big brigade didn't move because of a missed order-roll. One point was held by some Rat Swarms. I wasn't very afraid of his flying monsters to destroy them bec. I even had Gutter Runners left to pop out and countercharge those (just in case).

His 3rd turn went better. His daemon hordes charged my little brigade by initiative (wasn't a good decision in my opinion) and finally his army started to move a bit around :) Cavalry moved in a quite good position (very flexible one) and his other infantry got into defended positions in the terrain. Too bad for his charged-by-initiative unit: I was defended and had 2 Units in support. He made a few wounds (he needed 5s) but not even enough to stop the rage of my Rat Ogres + Stormvermin. Those rolled sufficient well to crush that unit after a few phases of battle. I re-positioned them quite well after the battle.

My 3rd turn went quite well. The good positioned Rat Ogres charged the Daemon Hordes and my Stormvermin could see the same brigade to do so too by initiative (on the photo you see Trolls in the first line but he played them as daemon hordes too - he didnt have enough miniatures). I moved my big brigade in a better position (avoid to get flanked again) and expanded my Rat Swarms backwards so I held the second point of this scenario. Very badass tricks were about to come up bec. I managed to get a unit of Gutter Runners on the other side of this battle (see pic). They didn't get the second order to attack but this maybe was even better. My potent mages pushed the Rat Ogres to a death frenzy and I scored additional 8 attacks for them. Even the fact that I had to roll on 5s and that it wasn't a charge in the open didn't avoid my victory. Stand by stand was pushed back into the Gutter Runners, which did the rest of the work by just standing there.

His turn again and he tried to charge my scenario - holding Rat Swarms with his chariots. Order 1 was applied but he didn't manage a second one. Bad for me: they stopped on my general and I had to stick him to a unit of Rat Ogres which were charged in the flank by both units of his flying army (he made the important 2 orders he had to give this time). That didn't shock me bec. he also touched a unit of plague monks. I was expecting that the Rat Ogres will survive the first combat phase and after that the flyers won't have any more punsh. Also the lonely unit of daemon hordes charged the last standing alone stand of my Clanrats in the terrain. Then he started magic which could be banned by a scroll of dispelling :D So he made a bad to-hit-rolls of with flyers. Even the enemy general which was supporting them in combat didn't change the fact the he made only about 4-5 wounds (and I even saved 1-2 of those). Striking back meant the end of the game because I ate those units which means that I simultaneously reached his break point.
Great victory bec. he didn't get very much (I guess it was a full unit of Clanrats and half a unit of Stormvermin) and I held both of those defending points and even got his general+BP.

This brings me to my last
5th game Vs dwarfs - this time with cannons
Pitched battle was to be made. He had the first turn, put his cannons on a hill, got his dwarf warriors and slayers into the wood and other terrain. As I had my first turn I knew this is going to be a hard game bec. of his dwarfs just standing in terrain. My first turn wasn't very spectacular. Activated my Rat-Swarm-anti-artillery-force-field :D, seperated some Jezzails to await the Rangers and arranged a shooting corridor for my Warplightning Cannons with the Rat Swarms of the little, shooty brigade.

(cheesy force field, isn't it? ;) Thanks here to Lex :D)

Don't want to describe very much here - it ended up by Gutter Runners in the wood, which were slain by the warriors and some Slayers. His gyrocopters managed to trouble my Jezzails which were shot from both sides (Rangers from front, Gyros from behind). They didn't charge by initiative (my mistake). They didn't even shoot 1 of those nasty flying machines. His cannons had to shoot at the force field Rat Swarms but didn't deal much dmg, bec. they weren't able to bounce in another unit. The whole shooty brigade was slain by some Slayers (but my Rat Swarms didn't fight bad :D).
What broke my neck was the time, bec. the dwarf player had 4 turns and my poor little Skaven force just 3. This may sound like and excuse but even if I would have had a 4th turn my Skaven wouldn't have been able to slay that many dwarfs bec. he really was very good positioned in the terrain.
It ended up with a win for the dwarfs bec. he scored more victory points.
Some pics:

Gutter Runners slaying some Slayers

He was preparing for good positions in the wood

I was aiming to get at least his Rangers with some heavy hitters but I didn't manage to roll sufficient well for orders

The shooty brigade before it was erased by a unit of Slayers (or warriors).

Hopefully you enjoyed this 5 battle reports - was quite a lot of work finding the best pics :)

Thanks for the battle reports, good pictures great commentary, excellent!

We can even see some Skaven "special" big brigade formations  :o
I did not realise that Skaven were parade ground trained  ;)

Thanks for the eye openers and letting us into the world of rats.  (shudder)

Peter is a quick student   8)

I was already berated over dinner on saterday about the "uberpowered" rats, which was real funny, because they kinda always bring on that reaction when somebody gets a good grip on playing them. Kudos to Peter on grasping the way to play Skaven so quickly, I guess it IS his forst army played to any extend, which may actualy be a pro in this case.

BTW.. I still DO think you should have a unit behind the bell pushing it    :-X

My own EuroGT adventures to be published soon, with pictures

Thanks all and yep its my first army but this may quite be an advantage because it make the following tip from Lex quite better:

Don't think brick - think Skaven.
Rule #1: Rat Swarms are for connecting brigades :D

Can you give us a break down of what units you took for the 2000points of Skaven?

Sorry for the lack ... just read your post. I played my Skaven force 2000p this way:

1 Grey Seer + Scroll of Dispelling
2 Heroes
2 Warlocks
____

5 x Clanrats
3 x Stormvermin
2 x Jezzails
2 x Plague Monks
10 x Rat Swarms
3 x Gutter Runners
2 x Rat Ogres
4 x Warp Lightning Cannon
1 x Screaming Bell
____

2000 out of 2000
Poorly breakpoint of 16 ;) (was hoping to get 17, but not enough units were painted)

Greetings,
Peter
