Model sizes
« on: October 25, 2016, 05:32:10 AM »
Hey everybody, I've got just a quick question...

What are the sizes of the models in BFG? In particular, the size of the Tau vessels (Both Kor'Vattra and Kor'Or'Vesh), but vessels from other navies are also important for reference. If possible, could I get the length and width measurements in mm? Trying to do a correlation between BFG and RT vessel size as I'm doing a RT Tau supplement with the Tau ships and I really want to fit them properly in scale.

Thanks!

Okay, I had it...

this is the third time this year. I'm gonna crack open my old laptop and see if I can find the file in which I did all those measurements...

Starting point:
Tau Manta Missile Destroyer:

Lenght: 32 metres
Width: 52 metres
Height: 8 metres

Actually only width is needed. Crack it horizon!

But... But... I was actually asking about the size of ships in millimeters. I will gladly also take your input on their size based on your Manta scale, but I still need the mm sizes for the models. That is if you don't mind measuring the models, of course  :D Your Manta scale vs my data would be an interesting comparison!

I know. ;)
But I had all that done before Rogue Trader existed. Lol.

Well... Shucks! I have no reply, though I'll gladly show the Tau supplement once we finish it.

On the other side, I haven't forgotten that I have a special Eldar ship to draw, I just haven't managed to get it to look right yet :/

Okay, then, here is the not-nice looking chart:

Tau Manta
Width   52   metres   > assume width of 75 metres needed
Lenght   32   metres
Height   8   metres

Manta launch bay   Model size      Real life size      factor:
Width   3,5   mm   75,00   metres   21,42857143
Height   1,5   mm   32,14   metres

Protector
Width   82   mm   1.757,14   metres
Lenght   40   mm   857,14   metres
Height   11   mm   235,71   metres

Custodian
Width   100   mm   2.142,86   metres
Lenght middle   55   mm   1.178,57   metres
Length launch   73   mm   1.564,29   metres
Height   25   mm   535,71   metres

Emissary
Width   58   mm   1.242,86   metres
Lenght   50   mm   1.071,43   metres
Height   14   mm   300,00   metres

Castellan
Width   37   mm   792,86   metres
Lenght   21   mm   450,00   metres
Height   3,5   mm   75,00   metres

Warden
Width   26   mm   557,14   metres
Lenght   20   mm   428,57   metres
Height   3,5   mm   75,00   metres

Here is the much nicer link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iI5tiCltviMHJz89N9peVb6uJWHaKg9jdFaiixf8zZE/edit?usp=sharing

And some more background information:

Back in the day when we were debating the Tau forgeworld models and what there stats would be a hotly debated thing was the fact on which weapon on the model represented what. So...... I mailed the original forgeworld designer back then, who replied within a day!, to ask what his intention was.

So the stubs on the front, one on each wing, four next to the torpedo tubes, are the Railgun Batteries. The Large Turrets on top of the wings (1 per side) are the Ion Cannon. The small turrets all over are anti-ordnance (covering all arcs as the Tracking-System rules tell us). The Bay underneath is for Manta's and the holes in the front of the wings for shuttles, dropships and alike (barracuda's).

With above in mind Distant Darkness was created. The railguns stubs promoting fixed arc and leading to 90* turns. I am diverting...

So, if the designer says the launch bay underneath is for Manta's then we can assume he kept things on the model within scale of itself.

Above values may seem low compared to the FFG Rogue Trader ones. But they are quite perfectly in line with the old line of sizes that had Imperial Cruisers at 2500-3000metres long, light cruisers around 1000-1500metres, Frigates ~750metres and destroyers ~500metres.
All before Black Library started doing their stuff. And before FFG made Rogue Trader. I really love RT and Koronus (I helped on it, its got my name hey hey) but the sizes are still a quirk to me.

So, Frosty and everyone else. I hope above helps. And when translating to Rogue Trader just slap some metres on to them.  8)

Thanks Horizon!
Would you happen to also have measurements of the Kor'Vattra ships and the Courier Tau Transport?

Great work and the answer from the designer is great to know. Did you also do the size conversions for ships from other races?

PS: The Custodian with its 3 Wardens are my favourite BFG models ever! The Eclipse comes 2nd, Shadowhunters 3rd :P

Unfortunately not. I don't have the Courier. And the explorer is the only other Tau vessel I have.

Furthermore I think that the forgeworld fleet is the only one designed in a coherent scale.
But I can try and add the same factor to other ships.

The custodian is indeed great. The great detail being that you can actually fit three wardens inside the custodian!

The craftworld eldar void dragon (flame of asuryan) is my favorite vessel.

I'm so sad I didn't manage to get one a Custodian + Wardens when they were still being made :( I was too young to afford them beforehand, but hope they can be 3d printed or something. Also, I suck at painting hahahaha

I like the Flame of Asuryan, the Starlight's edge would be like a Flame of Asuryan where the hull is switched for the Eclipse and the two "wings" where the pulsars are replaced by Shadowhunters. That's hard to draw :(

Back on topic:
Could you give me the mm measurements of the other models you've got? And the measurements for the Kor'Vattra + Courier if you can extrapolate them? The more data I get, the better I can estimate later.

PS: Here's the RT supplement thread if you want to check it out http://www.rollforheresy.net/forum/topic/tau-kororvesh

Thanks for the link.

As for the Custodian, sorry about this then:

 ;)

And I will take a look at the RT Tau list you are building.

I've taken your measurements and got the following sizes for the ships:
Custodian: 4.2km long, 5.7km abeam, 1.4km high
Warden: 1.1km long, 1.5km abeam, 0.2km high
Protector: 2.3km long, 4.7km abeam, 0.63km high
Emissary: 2.9km long, 3.3km abeam, 0.8km high
Castellan: 1.2km long, 2.1km abeam, 0.2km high

What do you think? Are those reasonable when compared to the other RT values?

I cry every time I see that custodian, horizon  :P
(both for the model and the fact I can't paint that well)

Horizon, what do you think of this so far?

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hydeu4cXQeNgj93AlUAyMJhVL8Q3jL9EUlVDJIUiohc/edit?usp=sharing I'm still looking for sizes for the Kor'Vattra vessels and the Courier transport, but think that it's all coming along rather nicely.
