Which manufacturer for Romans?
« on: November 09, 2009, 04:26:02 PM »
Hi, I'm thinking of picking up a Roman army for WMA but I'm struggling to choose a manufacturer for the figures, mainly because most have pretty insubstantial galleries. So far I'm thinking of trying Pendraken but has anyone got any other suggestions? Also, what period would you go for? In a naïve attempt to get some games in I'd like to pick a popular time period if there is one. Thanks, P.

Well that's the question isn't it? Which 'period' of Romans do you want to go for? As far as Early Imperial, the classical Romans from the likes of Gladiator, and the style found on all those old films (even if the style of armour, etc... might have been out by five or six hundred years), with Loria Segmentum, etc... Then Steve Barber is the one to go for IMHO, it's what I went for anyway.

Late Imperial Roman, IIRC Pendraken are the guys that manufacture Clibinarium's figures, and quite frankly they are bloody gorgeous.

There are some Republican ranges available as well, but no late Republican as of yet. It is on my 'if I ever get the time' to-do list to have a go at sculpting some though, so watch this space. You might have to wait a while though, I first though of giving it a go about eight years ago... ;)

I am not sure if you mean Late republican romans the Marian ones. If so, I know Old Glory has some infanteries (re-using Princeps I think).

If you sculpt any let us know!

I don't have any roman army and would like to build an early imperial one. Steve Brarber seems top quality
Other possible manufactures could be Irregular, Magister Militum, Old glory.
Punic wars and early imperal should be enough popular to find games/opponents.

Here it come a comparison pic of roman figures. Hope to help you pw in the difficult decision of electing a roman period... paint the whole army is easier  ;D

Some years ago I will recomend you goe for punic wars/early republican.... but know maybe I will go for late roman... It is a matter of taste

First row is Pendraken; second row is Irregular miniatures.

I will try to name them properly, If a commit a mistake, just correct me, this goes also for you Ed (Ed is more familiar with the roman uniform than me :P )

First row: two poses of late roman legionaries

Second row: Imperial cavalry + Imperial legionary + Iberian ally (republican times) + Republican roman hastati + roman soldier (Marian reform) + Greek hoplite + Greek officier

Thanks for all of this. I think, having browsed the internet like a man obsessed that I may go with Clibinarum's Romans. I've seen a few pics of them painted over on TMP and they look superb. That'd also mean that I could paint up a Hunnish army as their enemies which sounds pretty appealing. That said I'm not going to let this happen until my WM Empire reach at least 1000 points so there's time for my mind to be changed!

Just a though or a comment or a tip: GW sells now the kislev steppe horse just for a direct petition of Rich Prestly who had been asked for his "hun archers". So maybe next year this unit will be discontinued. If you are thinking in the Hunnish army, take this in mind, because maybe when if you want to build it up on march 2010 (for example) it could be very difficult/expensive to find them up.

So... I know Clibanarium is actual working in Hunnish army, but unitil his figures hit the stores, the best hunnish figures are kislev steppe archer (in my opinion).

as I said in the beginning it is just a though, and maybe you have also thouht about it,

regards

Thanks for that jchaos, back in the recesses of my mind I think I knew that too. I'd asked Rick which figures he'd used for his army and he pointed them out to me and even then (quite a few months ago) he recommended getting them as soon as possible. Now I have to figure out how many I'd need and how much they'd cost. I have a feeling it'll horrify me!

IIRC HUnnic light cavalry has to a wide frontage, so you will have to cut the KHArchers strips so that could be a problem.
As for me - I prefer Old Glory:
