Hello everybody! New to BFG
« on: July 24, 2015, 09:38:37 PM »
Hey guys,

I just wanted to briefly introduce myself and say hello. I started with BFG just a few days ago. Actually I was interested in the game since its introduction in 1999 but I never bought it myself due to the lack of time and the fact that there were no other BFG players around. Recently I got one of my friends interested in the game and we wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately we realized that BFG was already OOP and dead. Nevertheless we decided to start either way. With the insane prices on ebay for crappy, incomplete, preassembled and prepainted stuff I had the idea to start from the scratch and let the 3d printer do the job instead. Ok, actually it isn’t as easy as it sounds, because I have to reinvent (or copy) everything in 3d first, plus I will have to do it all alone because my friend isn’t too much into crafting and painting and in addition I have to deal with two fleets at the same time. At least it looks like I’m on the right track. Once you have the 3d files it is pretty straightforward because of the modularity of the ship designs.

So we went for Imperial Navy and Chaos. The first two 500 point battlegroups are almost ready for a battle. The last Chaos ships come most likely out of the printer tomorrow. The aim is two almost equal fleets with a variety of ships for fun games rather than a tournament ready combination.

First step 500 points:

Imperial Navy
- Dictator Class Cruiser
- Lunar Class cruiser
- 3x Cobra Class Detsroyer

Chaos
- Devastation Class Cruiser
- Murder Class Cruiser
- 3x Infidel Class Raider

Next step 1000 points:

Imperial Navy
- Mars Class Battlecruiser
- Tyrant Class Cruiser
- 1 additional Cobra

Chaos
- Hecate Class Heavy Cruiser
- Carnage Class Cruiser
- 1 additional Infidel

I think I will add Grand Cruisers and a few more escorts in the 1500 point goal but that’s for the future. With a few years out of the GW hobby and without painting and stuff I kept the colors rather basic with the standard green hull and white prow for IN and overall red for Chaos. I think it gives a nice contrast on the table even without too much effort.

Thank you for the replies.

Sorry for the delay. I was quite busy over the last weeks. Sadly I didn’t have much time for everything hobby related. My three Infidel Class Raider are still waiting for their paint. Maybe I can finish them tomorrow.

As there were some questions about the 3d printing … I printed everything with an “Ultimaker 2” FDM home 3d printer. The ships are printed in parts and glued together, similar to the original models. The Cobras consist of 4 parts the Chaos Devastation Class Cruiser of 22 parts for example. The bases are from GW but starting with the Chaos Cruisers I printed new stems too, because the original stems were too fragile.

As for the quality… With the current generation of FDM home 3d printers you won’t get the quality of injection molded stuff, especially when printing small parts. And you won’t get the perfectly smooth surfaces of plastic miniatures. The scale of the BFG ships pretty much marks the boundaries of the possible and I had to make some compromises here and there. Nevertheless I am pretty satisfied how the prints turned out so far.

Yes, I checked out Battlegroup Helios. Looks interesting. I wish they would expand their product line a little bit. For now I stick to the basic BFG stuff.

Edit:

So, I finally managed to add the Infidel Raider to the Chaos fleet. The starting 500 points are done. We also tested the ships in battle today. I can tell you, even a 500 points battle can take a whole lot of time… especially if you have to look up the rules every two minutes. Man, I didn’t expect how many questions occur once you start playing. By the way, my Imperials lost. Everything looked good until my opponent landed some lucky shots on my Dictator and turned it into a lifeless floating hull. From there on my ships where easy prey for his bombers and assault boats.
