Flying Stand options
« on: July 01, 2015, 07:36:46 PM »
Hey there guys,

since I'm quite a late in coming to the BGS Scene I'm having toruble finding Flying stands suitable for my Battleships. 40k 35mm flying stands work perfectly for my frigates and cruisers however there doesn't seem to be stands which suit the battleships as they have a bigger insert.

Can you guys help with finding suitable bases?

Cheers

Well, personally I've had very little trouble with the GW clear flying bases (both 32mm and 60mm). When the peg has been a little too big I've either drilled out the hole on the model with a pin vise (where possible), or whittled down around the peg with my file. Admittedly though, I'm also fairly new at this; I've been using the clear bases for the specific reason that I can glue a bearing compass to the bottom and have it show through the top.

As for other bases, there are some 32mm and 60mm 3d-printed BFG bases available on Shapeways, but they are somewhat more expensive to buy in bulk.

If you want really "serious" flight stands, the Omnistand system from CorSec Engineering is top-notch. However, it requires either a lot of model modification (if you want the flush connectors) or gluing a very sizeable screw to your model, obscuring detail.

I use the plastic "base" but drill/dremmel out a hole for a steel/brass rod on all my capitol ships. Only escorts have plastic stems for me.

Some people even mount magnets or a little nut and bolt stand to make the ships detachable for transport.

Trust me, even plastic cruisers will eventually break on those plastic stems.

Agreed. Brass/Steel rods for permanent stands.

I forgot to mention that the reason the GW plastic rods work for me is because I don't glue my bases. Since they have bearing compasses on the bottom, it doesn't matter as much if the ships can rotate a bit on their stands. Though I do tend to wrap the tip of the stand in a small amount of tape if the fit is too loose and the ship is spinning too much.

I have been looking into a variety of flying bases, as a result of reinterest in WWII aircraft games and a new BFG fleet. I have a mix of three options in my minis.

1. Regular 32mm and 60mm flying bases are still pretty easily available. This is the easiest option. I prefer the round stands over the hex foot versions, and these are a little more difficult to find, but they are out there. eBay is a good place to start, but also companies that make flying minis often sell the bases separately as well.

2. For my WWII aircraft, I found two sizes of brass tube, one slotting inside the other. A peg is inserted into the mini using the smaller brass tube, and the larger brass tube is mounted on a foot (I use a round 25mm base, with a 25mm polystyrene sphere cut in half, and insert the base pole into this. This means that the mini can be added and removed from the stand for transport, and is probably the cheapest but most effort required version.

3. For my BFG, I use the OmniStand from CorSec. I have the clear foot with 30 degree markings. I got a mix of the topper plugs and external mount holes, but find that the inserted plugs are pretty big and require drilling out the hole in the mini to insert. So, I have gone with the external toppers, glued to the underside of the ship and the base stem screws into this. These are pretty good, and come with a rubber washer at each end of the stem for a good fit, but they are a little fiddly. That said, they are sturdy and work well, and worth the extra expense for me in a small fleet. They are not cheap though, and in some case cost more than the Escort mini sitting at the top!

I found a bunch of Golf Tees some time ago in a discount store and screwed them to acryl bases a friend of mine even uses flat wooden discs wich are 3,5 cm or 6 cm in diameter. I cut off the sharp tips and crafted the top of the stand so it would fit for every model individually. Though I'm still working on a "one fits all" solution this worked pretty well so far.

I've been using Corsec's stands on my Firestorm Armada minis for years now, and I'm completely satisfied with the result. However, they weren't arond when I was basing my BFG stuff. At the time, the best solution was a barrel-clasp method I found on the Star Ranger site. While I would use the Corsec stands today if I were to do it over again, the barrel-clasp method is still plenty valid and a lot cheaper if you are willing to put in the time and are ok with s slightly more fiddly result:
