Warmaster storage, transportation and magnetizing
« on: October 29, 2014, 07:08:51 PM »
How do you guys store, transport and magnetize your Warmaster armies? Tips / ideas welcome.

And how about if you have to do it with multiple armies numbering 100s of units...
I really would love to buy some Warmaster Kislev, Araby, Bretonnia, Vampire Counts, Chaos demons ...

Lord knows it's expensive for what it is and it isn't perfect but...

They need to be slavered in PVA glue - but I store them in there on my bookcase and put them in a supermarket "bag for life" with a flat bottom in a tower to take around with me. 10 of them will store about 130 units + 30 command stands.

I go with box files, lined with steel paper. Then I put magnetic sheet on the bottom of the stands.

It's a bit tedious to cut all the magnetic sheet up, and stick to the bases, buts it's not hard. It's important to clean off any bits of sand or other stuff from the bases.

It's amazing how the number of box files needed keep growing. Once upon a time I had 1 box file and labelled it Elves and Orcs. How naive this was! The Elves alone now fill at least 3 boxes, Empire much same, Araby just over a box, the poor Orcs still only fill one box, then there is nature which now spills over into its second box. And that's just the painted fantasy stuff...

I also have several metal drawer units, the most compact ones are bisley ones which the drawers are about 30mm tall, but these are expensive. There are also some ikea ones that are much cheaper, but the drawers are very deep for 10mm figures.

I use pizza boxes, now I have a distribution of small armies, medium armies and familiar armies.
Beware transportation and beware with big boxes because cuold bend the central part when several boxes are pile up.
I also use other carboard boxes of different sizes.

To transport for a game I use a GW suitcase.

Plastic boxes lined with steel paper. I get my magnetic sheet in strips from Magnetic Displays (.co.uk) which limits the cutting. The boxes, which I get at Clas Ohlson, are a perfect fit for the Army Transport bags.

I'm getting these to sidestep the magnetic sheet cutting step.

I'd not seen those before. They might be quite a good buy.

I just use hard edged foam tray carriers (Keiser Rushforth or Games Workshops own brand are both good).

I have two of the large (double size) GW ones that will hold a very large army between them - 140, (three bases per unit) units. The only downside is that they're very bulky. Fine in a car but a bit impracticable if you're travelling a long way on foot e.g. in a city maybe?

I prefer not to magnetise as it means they slip and slide on smooth edged hills.

I wonder if a touch of glued sand would kill the magnetisation..?

So where is a good place to buy magnet strips and sheet? And by good I mean cheap :-)

I like those premagnetised bases and is definitely thinking about it - too bad I just acquired 100s of new laser cut plastic bases...

By the way, how to best cut magnetised sheets for round bases?

I have considered putting a textured surface underneath the magnet/steel strip.

I took a big decision and dived into the Figure Storage Chests from Sally 4th / wargamesbuildings.co.uk that you suggested Stormwind.
I have ordered tons of trays in various heights with metal linen and 100s of warmaster and round bases with magnetic bottoms...

I chose the warmaster bases:
http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/epages/950003459.sf/sec658c1929bf/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950003459/Products/mb031
and a lot of round (4 and 5 mm and some larger square ones).

I chose these trays (3 heights and not the smallest height 3,5 cm as spearmen/riders etc. are too tall when based).

http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/epages/950003459.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950003459/Products/c025

And this lid:
http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/epages/950003459.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950003459/Products/c026

I add the specific links in case someone wants to check it out.

When it gets here I will leave a review and pictures for you guys...!

Thanks for input in the thread. I know people can make their own drawers cheaper, but I wanted convenience over cost and as I have 30k points to base anyways, I may as well do it right. And this product looks really nice and just what I was looking for!

I have considered putting a textured surface underneath the magnet/steel strip.

http://www.kallistra.co.uk/index.php?page=54

I think that will be too thick and stop the magnet from working.

I have found a bit of sand on the edges does help stop sliding - but I haven't worked out how to add this reliably - the odd stand I have with this sand outer edge has ended up this way from accidents during basing.

Late to the party, but I'll contribute anyway. :)

I use my standard Sabol/AT foam trays for normal transport. I remove all the foam from the center of the tray, leaving the sidewalls and bottom Then I lay in a sheet of foamcore for rigidity with a top of steel paper. Then I place my magnetized units right into the tray. It works really well, unless you tend to knock your bag around too much.

For regular storage, the local arts and crafts store has rigid boxes that I use for general storage - lined with steel paper, they are sturdy and stackable.
