Leadership Q's
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:43:49 PM »
I know these may seem like derp questions, but I swore I read them once and now can't find them.

1. When rolling leadership for Escorts, is it by ship or by squadron?

2. Can warships (escorts or cruisers) join transports or heavy transports to make a squadron?

3. If you can, then if the warships have a different leadership roll, such as (Chaos) Space Marines, do you roll using the SM chart or the general Ld chart? By ship or by squadron?

4. Provided all the above work, if I joined a SM escort to a squadron of Transports, do they still suffer -1 to their Ld if a warship is part of the squadron?

5. If I attached a SM escort to a squadron of Escort Carriers, would they suffer -2 to Ld when Reloading? (-1 for basic transport rules, -1 for Escort Carrier rules?)

1. squadron

2. They are listed as an escort class so unless the scenario rules say they can't be in a squadron I would think that they could join other escorts. Captical ships are right out though.

3. Likely still by squadron since they are escort class.

4. I would say yes since you are mixing types.

5. see previous.

Thanks!

For 2, why are capital ships out? A heavy transport is a capital ship, no?

For 3, do you use the generic Ld chart or the SM Ld chart?

For 5, is that normally the case? Escort carriers have a Ld of 4-7 when reloading? If you use the SM chart instead, would that be 6-8?

Ah, my mistake I'd grouped heavy trasports under the escort category and you can't squadron escorts with capital ships.

I'd roll on the majority type. The rules seem to assume you would only use them in an IN fleet and would use the regular LD chart for IN but since they are part of the "race" taking them you could argue that the SM chart would be rolled on for LD.

If you are using the SM ld, then yes.

I would say all transports roll on the standard chart -1. Even transports being used by space marines are going to be crewed by merchants and the ships are still going to have inadequate sensor suites etc...
As for grouping them together I would say no. The only instance where this would be common enough to even warrant discussion would be a rouge trader fleet and it say right out that they are independent squadrons and may only contain cargo ships. There is nothing specific about heavy transports but it can be taken that this would be the ruling for them also.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

Though it does not specifically say so you cannot mix ships from the defences category (system ships, monitors, transports of all kinds, fire ships) with warships. Mixed Ld rules squadrons are not permitted elsewhere (for example, SM/IN warships cannot form squadrons even in an Armageddon list) and so there would be no reason why they should do so here. Besides, if a warship were seconded to a transport squadron then they would lower their Ld value to that of the transports, as they'd be a hindrance no amount of leadership could alleviate, as opposed to warships which could do what is required of them given adequate direction.
