Source of ships and bits ??
« on: September 15, 2011, 08:45:48 AM »
Following the link to Shapeways that Vaaish had in his markers topic I ended up leaving through the shapeways gallery and found loads and loads of shops and parts.... an example

http://www.shapeways.com/model/157801/anime_like_fleet_4.html?mode=3d

Does anyone have any experience with these ??

Thats an interesting thought for sure, for bits.  Ships would probably be too complicated due to multipart.

I noticed a 'Jovian' ship.  Has Diasporex been outsourcing? ;)

Er, maybe you can do ships afterall.  http://www.shapeways.com/model/262717/majestic_class_passenger_liner.html?gid=mg
This one sure seems to have certain inspirations...

Heh,
I remember TheRowan. He posted on various BFG forums, lot on TacCom, in the past. So his inspiration is obvious. :)
Neat clipper.

The painted version seem to indicate that the casting/printing material is perty coarse.....  either that or his paint is off

IMO even the expensive Shapeways materials give only just acceptable results. There will still be some printing marks on curved surfaces that will need sanding smooth. Edge details are too rounded - they look like they came from a 10th generation recast!

And since I'm in a critical mood I'm going to say that none of his ships are as great as what they cost to print. They are missing a whole level of detail that would be required to make them look right among the rest of the Imperial fleet. The general design of the transports aren't too bad, but they're mostly copied from the existing transport designs, so it's kind of hard to go wrong. Like I said they just need more detailing...

Haha thanks! Actually, I'm avoiding getting involved with 3D modelling/printing. My day job is at a computer much of the time so I'd rather come home and work with my hands on physical models ;)
