Differences in Admech and IN Strategies/List Building
« on: May 27, 2011, 04:45:19 AM »
One of the fleets I play a lot is IN. I enjoy their in-your-face style of play. I love torpedo shotguns, Retributions, Cobras, Armageddons, etc. I have some more ships on the way and I was thinking about making a Admech fleet.

Since I will have both, I would like to give them a little different setup so they don't play similarly. With the addition of the 60cm lances Admech cruisers get, the capability to get nova cannons, and the negatives on boarding, it seems that they will fair well as a longer ranged fleet utilizing the 6+ prow. I was thinking about working my way to a 2000pt fleet. I would probably have an Oberon with a NC, two Dominators, a Lunar with an Endurance, Swords, and I'm not sure what else. I hope to deploy back and get the most of their NCs and 60cm lances until closing for closer range combat.

Any advice?

There are no AdMech Dominators.

My experience so far with admech has been basically a slightly longer ranged IN with fewer ships or heavy escorts. IMO most of the cool stuff makes them cost too much and cuts into how many ships you can field.

NCs generally don't make up for a lack of torpedoes.

AM are pretty hard to use as they are quite expensive. This disadvantge will be keenly felt, you will want to stay at range as long as possible. However some scenarios will make this nearly impossible!

Nova Cannons are scary! I'd suggest taking them on every cruiser except the Dicator.

Dictators are great! They are really expensive but I think they gain the most out of all the IN cruisers as they get +1 Ld. Special torps are a really good upgrade.

Hunters are awesome and at this cost take as many as you see fit. You'll need CAP to protect against A-boats though.

You can go top heavy and get light cruisers and BB's. This actually works! But I prefer NC's over BB's it depends on your tastes.

When I joined the Corp we didn't have any fancy smancy tanks! We had sticks! Two sticks and a rock for an entire platoon, and we had to share the rock!

I've never played Admech, but if I did my list would probably be:
Ark
Lunars with special torps
Tyrants with plasma boost+nova cannon
Dictators with nova cannon
Endurances
+Various Escorts

I think it is better to load on cruisers. This makes the dorsal 60cm lance being better in an upwards curve.
Add a Battleship with some dorsal lances and suddenly even Chaos starts to worry at 60cm.

CL are their for boost of units. Endeavour with range upgrade, attached to a Lunar makes something neat.

Do no forget escorts. You need the units to create the numbers.

If you have a fleet with 3 units the enemy with 4 units only needs to target 3 units to shut your fleet down.
If you have 6 unites there will be 2 untouched.

What do you guys think about using a Gothic in the Admech fleet? It seems to me that it would be less optimal than a lunar because the range can't be upgraded.

Couldn't disagree more. AdMech depend a lot on range upgrades, and if you're prow on to fire expensive NCs you aren't broadside on to fire expensive range upgrades. Torpedoes are also more powerful than NCs at close range, and you'll very much miss them when things get in close and enemy numbers start to tell.

Gothics under AdMech are cool. It has a dorsal lance to add to the other cruisers at long range. Snipe Snipe.

Then on a broadside it has 5 lances. Only 30cm but 5 lances is scary to everyone. On LockOn I have managed to destroy/cripple small escort squadrons with ease. 6+ armour is cracked with fun.

The last battle my Gothic rolled AWR. While this meant nothing to weapon batteries I had 5 lances that score a double hit on a 6.
And if you then roll three times a six with five dice you suddenly have six hits. WHHAAHAH

You can use NC's and ranged broadsides at once! Use a cross formation and glance enemy ships into the prow arc. ('spiral' around your enemy) Don't be afraid to space your ships/squadrons out.

I'd say the most important thing is to use escorts! And endeavours as squadron support.

Great advice all around.
