Tau fleet variants?
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:42:25 PM »
I'm trying to help a friend decide on a fleet in BFG.  I know the first Games Workshop fleet, but how many other variants are there?
Tried and tested homemade options are acceptable, just looking for ideas.  All I can find so far is a 'trail' fleet from forgeworld in 2006.

The Forgeworld list is the most used and quite balanced for the models produced by Forgeworld. It isn't a fresh list, still pretty same rules as GW list but the different models should really mean different rules/design philosophy.

(issue 75)

The list in Armada, now better know as the Tau Empire pdf under resources on the Games Workshop site is the one and only list for the Games Workshop produced models.
(See GW site)

Currently the High Admirality, rules committee, is writing a new set of rules for the Forgeworld models, the draft can be found in the rules question section of this forum. To be honest it is a crap, bad, annoying draft and I hope it'll never be official.

Under the main guidance of Shinnentai & Xisor on the former SG forum a Tau fleet based on Forgeworld models was made. It has some good & unique ideas but I think it is not quite 'it'. They wanted to update that list at a given point but the demise of the forum has stalled it.

Then we have Project Distant Darkness, my & Zhai Morenn's variant list. Based on the Forgeworld models. A fleet with a philosophy based on the models: less ordnance, faster, manoeuvrable, fixed forward gunnery. The list itself is a character list. The rules themselves are balanced but the fleet list makes it pretty 'odd'. For an official variant a normal fleet command structure should be adapted I reckon.

Enjoy!

Thanks so much, didnt realize there were so many options!

I hope my friend picks the original fleet rules still, regardless of if he uses the FW ships or not.
I just love the Explorer class, so cheap for so many awesome ordnances :)
Feels very tau-like, new to space but has alot of good support.

Well, if he goes down to 3x Explorer, 9x Orca, 2x Hero, 3x Defender route you'll wish he never started them...

Ah, so the newer variant attempts are attempts at balancing an OP fleet?

What?

The new 'attempts' are trying to make suitable rules for the FW models.

Oh, understood.  I thought perhaps it was due to discontent over the GW rules, my dumb.
