BFG Re-release
« on: February 09, 2018, 02:50:01 PM »
Spikey Bits in their recent coverage of the Horus Heresy/Necromunda weekender mentioned in passing that an upcoming BFG release from GW has been confirmed.

https://spikeybits.com/2018/02/latest-pics-of-gws-new-mechanicum-knight.html

Scroll down, it's after the Termite and Mole.

Anyone got more information than a passing mention?

not to be a cynic here nor to rain on any of your parades but, I'll believe when I see it. I've lost count at how many times this has happened now...

Even if this will happen...GW will surely find a way to f**k it up.

And in response, I point out they just announced the release of a Squat, so...

It's not even a mention...BFG's rerelease is at least 2+ years out, and if other hearsay from the event is to be believed, it's going to get completely ruined by making it SM vs SM vs SM vs SM vs SM...

"Battlefleet Ultrasmurfs against Battlefleet Sigmarmarines"

+ rescaling.
+ ships wich can only be used for a limited time.
+ continous updates for sm, then for one other faction, than for sm...
+ continous rising prices.
+ powercreep.
+ ultrapowercreep. that kind of powercreep only gw can imagine.
+ dumbed-down rules. to reach a bigger audience. lets get those 8 year olds in.
+ models cast in some obscure new material wich cost nothing in produktion, looks like an accident, sells for at least double the price, gives you cancer AND bestow some kind of curse on your family which your descendants can only cure with help from the sixt daughter of a sixt daughter of mahatma gandhi.

Can't wait.

The only "good thing" i see right now: If BFG (or what will be left from BFG) will be played in gw-stores - we can swarm them. With stuff they will not like. With Selfmade Tyranid ships. With Ships from 3D-printers. With recasted ships. With fleets that doesn't have official models like Rak'Gol or Fra'al. Just for the moment when mr. redshirt has to decide if he wants to risk the mood of his "new game event" or not.

Edit:

To post at least something "constructive" and not "only rant":
What they really SHOULD do (but thats not gonna happen):

- they should just look around what kind of different rulesets are out there and why they exist. Non-official rulesets have formed because of some difficulties with the base rules (BB+Armada+f2010). Then they could adress the problematic parts and create a ruleset wich is almost identical to the rules every BFG-player knows, but with less problems

- they should look around for non-official ship profiles (especially from BFG:Fr) and make them official. After their inventors recieve their money, i am sure gw knows about "intellectual property".

And that may be it.

Don't get me started on "40k fanboards".

BFG Re-release
« Reply #12 on: February 12, 2018, 08:25:08 PM »
I think it's fairly likely that Games Workshop will release another space ship game, and it might even have similar mechanics to the original (just as the new Necromunda does)—but I think it would be a mistake to think it will be re-releasing BFG exactly as it was. It seems to make very little economic sense to do exactly the same thing for what's really a pretty tiny market (people who still play BFG), especially since the current accepted ruleset is pretty good.

What I would hope for is that they design a solid, modern, and interesting set of rules, like what it seems they've done with Adeptus Titanicus (and it would be nice if it was partially based on the old ones). The existing community of motivated BFG fans would then be free to expand the game with other fleets etc..

I really suspect that part of the success of BFG was that they made a good ruleset and then official support nearly vanished: a well-known company and story universe coupled with a good game gave it a much better start than countless other games that have disappeared, and the simple (yet effective ) rules lend themselves to reasonable fan development.

Otherwise, I'm rather pleased with a lot of developments the world has made in the last 20 years :P Sadly, though, it seems as if discussion boards are slowly declining towards their end.

But it makes even less economic sense to pass up the boost in brand name visibility that the new BFG video game is giving the brand.

A valid point, too! But Total War: Warhammer and Age of Sigmar have sadly shown the track record for this kind of sense. I also wonder if the gap between releases would erode most of this benefit (and I guess BFG:Video Game was approved before the possibility of Specialist Game revival?).

I suppose it also doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense to name a new iteration of the game after the Gothic sector if the focus is on Heresy-era battles. Battlefleet Gothic was, neverthless, an excellently chosen name.
