Advise with building a Chaos fleet
« on: January 06, 2018, 05:34:18 PM »
Hi once again!
This time I’m posting because I have ordered my fleet, and I’m thinking about what would be the best way to build it. I’ve ordered:

Despoiler battleship
Regular battleship
Repulsive grand cruiser
6x cruisers
9x escorts

I had a list in mind (using 2010FAQ) at 1500 points:
4 carnage
Repulsive (lances, shield)
Despoiler (warmaster, CSM crew, st4 lances and either a mark, torps or terminators)

So I still have to decide how to assemble two cruisers and the battleship, and thought I’ve made some lists, they don’t convince me.

Taking into account that I can use the carnages as murders and the escorts as whatever I like, how do you think I would have the most flexible fleet?

I had the following idea:
Desolator
2x Hecate
4x Murder

Wich has pretty good long range firepower, but the ordnance isn’t either ld10 nor CSM crewed, and I somehow feel like the desolator doesn’t do that much better than a Hades or an Acheron would.

The BS is what gives me the most trouble, because it also dictates somewhat what the cruisers will be.

The Desecrator feels like a downgrade from the desolator, so the lists would feel pretty similar, the desolator is cheap, but I feel like it doesn’t add anything I don’t have, and the Relictor looks fun and interesting, but I feel like it would need to be supported by some slaughters, so I’ll need to get some bays from my cuisers, and unless I’m proxying my carnatge/murder as slaughters I’ll need more cruisers.

This ended up slightly ranty, so sorry for the wall of text.

If you have time and enjoy building lists as much as I do, feel free to post any lists as you like that have somewhat different playstiles bit share some ships (if that’s possible), the fleet won’t arribe untill february-march (the usuall warp stuff) so I’ve got time.

Thanks for your time.

I just found out BFG is pretty easy to magnetize, so there's that.

I guess I'll go with 2 heavy cruisers and 4 regular ones, but then there's nothing to decide besides that

+1 specially Chaos and Imperial Cruiser are easy to magnetize. You should go with that and if you like magnetize those base too. Then you have six Cruisers that can be anything you need and you can upgrade one day to twelve.

The flexibility of a Chaos fleet comes down to its cruisers, and I've always found a Carnage and Devastation pair offer versatility against most things, and a good starting point to structure a fleet up from.

If you like the long-range broadsides tactic many Chaos fleets use, the Carnage - Devastation pair works well, as do Styx and Acheron heavies. Either battleship works well in this role, though the attack craft from the Despoiler can offer more while you keep out at long range, if only to harass (and occasionally disable) your closing enemy with assault boat swarms!

For frontal attacks instead, remove the Devastation for more Carnages and/or Murders, and bring in Hades and Hecate heavies. Here, a Despoiler can bring in much-needed ordnance, as well as a brutal torpedo & attack craft combo as they close in.

Hope this helps.
