MWG BFG
« on: March 11, 2017, 11:32:20 PM »
Hey Everyone,

Josh from MWG here.  The company is (not yet officially) going to start covering some BFG and I am looking for some guidance.  Any advice on the best format to cover the game and what you folks would want to see/not see?

I will be playing Marines and have started a small fleet and wouldn't mind a bit of advice either.

Cheers,
Josh

Hey Josh. Good to see some more promotion of the game. Personally, I'd like to see something other than Imperials and Chaos. Everyone and their mom has an Imperial or chaos fleet tucked away somewhere. Theyre good for introducing the game to someone, but (in my opinion) they're both pretty stale. Id like to see pretty much any xenos race. Kitbashing ia pretty easy, especially for Nids, orks, and dark eldar. Marines are still pretty fresh too, but their official models can get pretty pricey on ebay. But yeah, just keep it fresh instead of just the same two fleets that everyone seems to have.

Rule set, most people play the official rules, with the 2010 faq. Some play the BFG:R or BFG:XR, but most/all events use the old official rules plus faq, so you might reach more audience that way. Again, just my opinion. Seek advice on the more confusing areas of the rules, like turret suppression (ahem *the cooler* ;-)).

As for marine advice, I havent played with them in a long time so I dont have much. Mostly just look at the 2010 faq. Specifically the parts on weapons batteries, as your bombardment cannons fire just like them. And dont forget to use lots of boarding actions. Its the Space Marine way. Thats pretty much all I got.

:Edit: Oh, and if you're going to be at Adepticon in a couple weeks, stop by the BFG tourney on Sunday the 26th. See it in action and get some good practical advice.

MWG...?

Blue book, Armada, and 2010 FAQ for sure. I'd love to be in battle reports but there's nobody around me that does that haha.

MiniWarGaming :)

It looks like we will most probably have Imperium, Marines, Chaos, Eldar, Orks and Tyranids being played.

I am pushing for the 2 official books and the 2010 FAQ for rules.

If it helps I have managed to get the following for my Marines;

2 Battle Barges
4 Strike Cruisers
3 Nova Frigates
7 Hunter Destroyers
3 Gladius Frigates

I was talking to Owen the other day and as soon as I can get my ships painted up I will head over to get some games in with him!

I will be Adepticon but I will most likely be working the whole time so if any of you BFG fans are around see if you can track me down at the MWG booth.

I've played Marines a lot.  Here's some things based on my experience.

-Their biggest problem is they have nothing between Battleship and Light Cruiser.  Sometimes the Battle Barge can get left behind.

-Always build for your mission, so for missions where speed is the key (i.e. Escalating Engagement) Strike Cruisers are boss.  For missions where you need endurance or hitting power, Battle Barges.  Unlike other fleets, Marines have NO RESTRICTIONS on taking smaller ships to get bigger, so you can go 2 Battle Barges and have them buddy up in an Exterminatus! mission.

-Escorts rock your socks.  Especially Gladius.  Get more.  They are your best hope against Eldar.

-Squadrons of 2-3 Strike Cruisers can be absolutely devastating.  My preferred strategy is to move one Strike Cruiser to one side of an enemy and launch Torpedoes and Thunderhawks.  Another Strike Cruiser is on the other side, and declares a Boarding Action.  First Strike Cruiser shoots Bombardment Cannons, causing a Blast Marker touching only the enemy (not the other Strike Cruiser though!).  Torpedoes and Thunderhawks hopefully cause a BFI (if they were on special orders already, this is moot).  So, as Space Marines, you perform a Boarding Action with +2 for Space Marines, +1 for enemy BM, +1 for enemy Special Orders.  Your opponent will probably get a +1 to +2 depending on their size and turrets, but that's a contested die roll where you can be at +3 to your opponent in most situations.  Plus, BFI can't save against Boarding Actions.

-Battle Barges are slow and can't turn well, but I've won games because I used a planet to get the Barge to turn extra.  Deploy Barges near planets to get 135 degrees of turn in one movement. (45 to start, another 45 after 15cm, and then another 45 after movement is over)

-Space Marines have fantastic Boarding Torpedoes and Thunderhawks (assault boats).  Launch every turn you can, and team up squadrons for big waves to smash opponents.  Even the dreaded Necron Tombship can't do anything if all its guns are turned off for a turn.

-Ram.  You are armour 6.  Cruisers are fast and maneuverable, so get behind them or to the side and take any opportunity to ram sides or rear.  Emperor help your opponent if they're close to your Battle Barge and you can manage to Ram and end the movement with the base overlapping so that you can board as well.

-Look out for lances.  Brace in most situations where lances are firing.

-Strike Cruisers are fragile.  If using the 2010 update (DO THIS) pay the extra 15 pts for a 2nd shield.  Makes them a lot more viable.

-Don't waste points on Terminator Boarding Parties.  Although Marines rule at Teleport Attack (because of +1 to hit-and-run) actually GETTING a Teleport Attack is HARD. (there are a lot of conditions that need to be met)  Buy more escorts instead, or cheap re-rolls.

That's all I've got for now!

Here you can view latest official rulesets:

And on what to play: that video games focuses on Marines vs Nids, right? So if you use that setup video game players may feel level of recognition.

Excellent. I will come and find your booth and chat for a bit. Get Owen to build more Nid ships. Those were fun batreps. Better yet, get all those guys on here posting and discussing. Always good to have more opinions and interest.
