[BFG] Horus Heresy Big Battleships Project
« on: January 28, 2016, 05:41:36 PM »
Have posted in a few threads here regarding the larger-than-battleship ships pictured in Horus Heresy Collected Visions and have decided to move forward with the modeling project. My primary interest is Mortarian's Death Guard Fleet, but other legions also had these larger ships. This first post is background with modelling continuing in the second post.

Some examples of the large ships:

Double stacked weapons bays
Death Guard Stalwart

Emperor's Children Erehwon

Mechanicum Aratan

Triple stack weapons bays
Death Guard Reaper's Scythe

Word Bearer Balthamirs Sword

Death Guard Rage of the Damned

Silly stacked weapons bays
Sons of Horus Vengeful Spirit

The first components are two, triple stacked five weapons battery long weapons modules and two basic prows, one for double stacked ships and a taller one for triple stacked ships (and Vengeful Spirit). Castings of the blank prows will serve as the base models for making the many different prow designs.

The prows have a sheet styrene base structure which is filled in the Magic Sculpt epoxy putty and sanded down. thin sheet plastic is then glued down over the epoxy for a clean surface finish. The weapons modules are built of sheet plastic and have magnet holes in each weapons cavity.

(A) that's insane!

(B) please maintain the level of detail as the other ships. (this would mean this project will be even more insane) I notice a lot of scratch built Titans and such fail in this, those looking simply as big oddly scaled models. So do keep this in mind. :)

Detail will be similar. Have started the detail on the weapons bay, but needed .040" half round plastic, which just arrived. Adding it will be today's project.

A bit of progress. I cut one of the triple stacked modules into one single and one double stack module. In the pic detailing is started on the double stack module. These modules will be molded and multiples cast, which will be mounted on the ship spines shown behind the modules. Prow pieces are separate and will slot into the ship spines.

Cool pic. Do we have a name for this SW ship? Is that the full pic? Nothing more showing the rear of the ship?

Definitely looks like a Heresy era ship with a battleship prow very similar to the Reaper's Scythe pic above and Space Marine Battle Barge side fins added. This is the same prow configuration as the Contrador from the FW Extermination book.

It's the full pic, sadly no rear shots. However, I'm curious to see if this will become the new aesthetic for BFG if GW decides to revive it again!
