8` x 4` Table Size
« on: January 17, 2015, 09:19:21 PM »
I was re reading parts of the old Warmaster rulebook and I am always pleased by the tone of the writing about the spirit of the game.

One thing I noticed in the advanced rules before the scenarios, about deployment, was that Warmaster hadn't just been playtested on 6` by 4` tables, but on ones that were 8` x 4`.

A 2000 point game of Warmaster doesn't feel as crowded on a 6 foot by 4 table compared with Warhammer and 40k, but it  did make me think.

Have any of you tried this or heard of others doing it? How did it go?

At my club we have several boards, including 4x4 ones. I was thinking I could put two of those together to give it a go at some point, especially, say, for one larger army versus two smaller armies.

Any experiences welcome!

Lex - I think part of the question was: "How did it go?"

 ;)
I really would love to buy some Warmaster Kislev, Araby, Bretonnia, Vampire Counts, Chaos demons ...

Round tables? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. =-P

Nope, actualy for a tournament it is ideal...  you have app the same table space as on a rectangular table, but without the "denied flanks".

Also because we allowed (depending on scenario) one of the players to pick his deployment zone they could determin any one point on the table to anchor the zone, which effectivly meant that ther ewas almost an unlimted numer of possible table configurations without the need to redress the table each time

I have played on an 8x4 and its a lot of movement and empty space.  I didnt have nearly the terrain i do now and i still do not have a lot so if you were doing a city invasion, street by street fighting and not going with a break point loss then its very worth it.

making a 2000+ point army move that far will make part of it get way out in front for sure and then maybe "let the rest catch up".  ultimately slowing the entire army down a bit and then not getting to the terrain you wanted for the battle and just having to fight with your army completely seperated.  That is what happened to my chaos and my brother's elves just rounded up my smaller chaos army.  I would leave the 8x4 tables for the 3+ player games but if you have enough terrain its incredibly cool to see in person!!!!

but its a huge table with not a lot on it, so it felt massive to me.

I will also admit, a round table sounds crazy!!  lol
but i would love to do it just because.

use a round table with chains of command....

if you have a round table of 160 diameter and you assume the normal starting distance between forces then you get the length for the chain of command

allow one player to choose to deploy first and to anchor his chain on any one point of the edge, and then to lay the "chain" so the other end also is on the edge, with the shape of the zone to his choice.

In the picture above asume the table is set with scenery and that scenery is NOT moved about.....
(Almost) infinite number op starting set-ups..... B-)

Well I imagine a round table would be good for a "king of the hill" type scenario...

As for terrain, well I have a lot of terrain now, with more to arrive... =-P

I've got four 4ft x 2ft boards, i've had some 8ft x 4ft games. They worked well, but i think it was 3k/4k games.

The space works well with a warmaster game

We play warmaster and plenty of other systems on a 9 foot by 6 foot board all the time. It's absolutely fine, you just set up 2 feet apart and do not allow people to start on the 'back' foot table edge (to prevent the dwarf cannons just squatting on the edge of the world to get those extra shots in).

I think I can speak for our group when we say the joy and spectacle of the game really comes out when you play with small figures (LOTS of them) on a large table. Of course the down side is that it often takes 2 and sometimes even 3 evening sessions to finish the games.
