battle honors
« on: February 04, 2015, 05:56:46 PM »
I am about to try out my first campaign game for warmaster using man o'war and mighty empires but the last thing I can think of right now are battle honors.

I like the honors in the rulebook but not how to receive them.  Has anyone done this thing before?  I have come across several ways but wondering if anyone else on here as really used a good system

thank you!

I ran a campaign with an adaptation of the WMAARmies campaign rules. Something more abstract than mighty empires. But fun.

We use the next:
The one who won earn a roll in the table of special abilities for a unit. If the unit is killed the following battles the upgrade disapear. A particular unit can only have an upgrade.

If they get the breakpoint then the general roll in the table for general upgrades. The upgrade is earn forever and linked to this general, so the only way of loosing it is dying. Only one general upgrade can be linked to a specific general.

So once an army is playing it can grow with vetaranies units but also some of them dies in sucessives battles, so the thing was balance.

As we were playing with several generals per player, general upgarde were not so common

After reading a few things and letting the 2 little dice in my head rattle around a bit I was mostly against the "battle honors" in the book because they didn't have what I have grown to call "battle scars".  Green horn replacements.

SO.....what I think I will try during my first campaign is this......

the winner gets to win one battle honor/scar....the scars can only be given to units going down to their last stand as they will be re-enforced after the battle with fresh recruits who don't know how to spit straight let alone march or hold a shield wall.  So the "battle honors" in the book will be duplicated and mirrored for the exact same thing but opposite.  "Vicious fighters" with the +1 to attack for the first round will turn into "Green Horns" and they will get a -1 for the first round of all engagements.  Etc. Etc.

Sticking to the rules in the book, only infantry and cavalry will gain these and only one may be given out total after each battle and only one per unit possible ever.  I badly wanted to allow multiples per unit but that would be too powerful and the only thing I could think of against it getting out of hand is that if you roll for a double, 2 "Bushwhackers" upgrades, one would just replace the other, not awarding the unit further at all and essentially wasting a possible battle honor.  But I will stick to the rules as much as possible as I trust the creators have already play tested the system before publishing the book

But "Battle Scars" are definitely in!

Any suggestions, please let me know ;)

The campaign could get too one sided if the winner gets a positive and the loser a negative, so having them go to the same side is probably a good idea.

you win, you decide whether you want to give one of your units a battle honor or one of your opponents units a battle scar.

roll on the chart and see what the unit you picked gets.  Mark it somehow

clear the table and get ready for the next game.

after listing all of the "battle scars" in a die roll table I have decided that there are too many command penalties so I have had to come up with a couple customs.  Do these sound unfair as compared to the battle honors in the rule book on page 114?

1.) Untrained.  Untrained on how to march and move in formations properly.  Cannot be issued their first order without being brigaded. (they move like a chaos spawn but kind of.  if they are brigaded they act like normal or they can be ordered anything on the second time like a normal troop of any sorts).  This is the custom one.
2.)Unloyal.  Forced to fight and dragged from their homes and family.  Always receive a -1 command penalty.
3.)Weak Fighters.  These troops have not figured out how to fight as a cohesive unit yet.  -1 to attack value in their first rounds of combat.
4.)Scared. Having not been in combat yet they are easily set to flee.  +1 die to any drive back rolls. a drive back from 2 hits is figured out on a roll of 3d6.
5.)Hurried to Fight.  Hastily enlisted men are not able to gather the proper gear.  +1 to armour value.  An armour value of 4+ becomes 5+ during the entire battle.
6.)Green Horns.  These troops are not quite used to the real hardships of war let alone a blister.  -1 to hit value for the entire engagement.

Anything seem to harsh?  I tried to stay away from too many command penalties because those seem to hurt the game to me, not enough fighting if your troops cant get to the fight.  The battle honors have 3 command bonus' that I had to find an alternative for.

Thank you for helping me!
