campaign insights and ideas for a noobs first campaign
« on: December 31, 2014, 04:36:12 PM »
Greetings one and all!

I'm fairly new to bfg but have likes it for a long time. I'm looking to do a bfg campaign. There will be 6-7 players with 4 fleets compromising of marines, chaos, imperium and orks is the current plan. I'm unsure how to sort out a map campaign. Due to fact the club only meets once a week and have other games to play as well it needs to be a map where combat isn't all the time where there is manoeuvring to systems that are either unoccupied or simply can pass through and 'cap' the system. Sorry if seems a bit unfocused that's only because it is atm. Rescently played a SAGA campaign where was a map of squares that could move around freely and there were towns and other places of interest that bumped in to where armies sometimes met n other times went past each, would this be workable in bfg? Any help would be of great help as I need a lot of it!

For the Emperor!

Have you looked at the basic campaign in the bfg rulebook?

you could try something which is a blend of Planetary Empires and the BFG campaign, so that moving your forces into a System which is unoccupied results in an automatic win. But the problem will be at the start of the campaign there will be very little fighting as people manouvre for 'free' Systems and then towards the middle/end of the game there will be constant fighting.

If you describe what you are looking for a little more, we might be able to help. Like what amount of fighting and suchlike. But just on the brief description it sounds like you might be struggling to find something out of the box so to speak. It may need to be managed quite closely by an Organizer and made up on the fly to a large extent.

Another option is rather than having a campaign map, play the campaign using Scenarios. If someone isnt there for the game then they are considered to be in transit or suchlike. The winner of the scenario takes control of the System and gets to pick the target of the next phase (normally have three or four scenarios lines up and give them a choice of three). The winner, however goes into the next Phase at a slight disadvantage due to them having to leave garrison forces at the last System, securing their new territory. That way it prevents someone from steam rolling one system after another.

Cheers for the ideas, definitely given me something to think about.

The situation is that my wargame club meets once a week and we play various games n usually have one campaign a year. For this to work and not be short and sweet campaign and make it integrate in to the rest of the war games is to do a map based plan with "orders" given each week for the movement of fleets. If 2 fleets should cross paths then there would be an engagement with subsequent win and loss bonuses award as applicable.  It's the map that I am having trouble with as the traditional systems maps will be a tad predictable once start meeting each other and will force multiple games weekly. A way around this is the map would be divided in to squares and each week the orders given would be to move in any direction a length to be determined. This way the campaign flows and things are always happening. Scattered among the map would be space stations / outposts / planets that players will come across and gain bonuses by either keeping them as staging areas or plundering them for campaign points and upgrades. Nobody will actually see the map. They will only see parts of the map that they have actually traveled through. I will be the only person to have the entire map and see where everyone is.

As I will be organosing the campaign I wont be actually playing the campaign but as with the space stations / planets scattered among the map there will be various "eldar pirates" which will be controlled by me and just to add an extra element in to the game play. In addition to this there will be a few transport convoys that are flofloating about for extra bounty if the players dare take on the escorting force.

As for the idea of fleet repairs and replacements the in game system really wouldn't be applicable. Instead of this after every battle once re known has been earned then both winners and losers will take damage, obviously losers will take more, but in both instances it won't be what actually was inflicted but a percentage of the damage done with some damage chart yet to be determined.

All the fleets will start off with one admiral and 1500pts of their own choosing. They will have the opportunity to buy an additional admiadmiral at the start of the game and can split their forces as they choose but oncc both admirals are dead then they will be out of the campaign. Through victory and finding the pre mentioned convoys and other places on the upgrades as well as replacmeelnts / reinforcements will be earned.

The campaign will end when there is only one person left or all the places of interest on the map will be plundered / destroyed.

Is this sounding any good or are these the mad ravings of an idiot? Any ideas and feedback k are most appreciated and welcome
