[WM Chaos] Does anyone ever take Dragon Ogres?
« on: January 06, 2015, 11:23:29 PM »
I love these models so much - but only having +5 save for the price and monster movement makes them seem a poor choice compared with Chaos Knights.

I enjoyed painting them so I proxy them as Chaos Knights and no one minds - but I wonder if anyone else thinks they're a bit overpriced for what they do.

From an armchair perspective, they do have 3 bases of 6 attacks and 4 hits and 5+ is not all that bad, so if protected and not subjected to too much shooting they should win most close combat and roll over most units with half the attacks.

Btw. I ADORE those models !!!! (I have a ton of them)
I really would love to buy some Warmaster Kislev, Araby, Bretonnia, Vampire Counts, Chaos demons ...

Chaos Knights out perform them only because cavalry is generally a better purchase overall.

The extra save the knights have and the 50pt cheaper price tag makes them much more appealing.

As Draccan stated though if you can get the right match ups and protect the dragon ogres they will run over most units especially infantry!

I view them as the "Tiger-II" of the Warmaster world. VERY powerful but VERY expensive.

Only take them if you are playing a large game. When I do take them I usually take 2 units and brigade them together and then use them as a second line follow up assault unit (after all the enemy war machines and archers have been screened or pinned/destroyed.

The few times I take them they act as a focus. Opponent is more focus in the dragon ogres and where they are as in the whole battle, so they have this unconscience add value ;)

I agree on the subconcious attack it gives your opponent.  I mostly use them for interior enfilade attacks.  I normally only have the one infantry brigade and one calvary brigade and put dragon ogres and hounds etc inside between the brigades.  When close enough the dragon ogres can usually sucker the oppnont into a game winning flank attack with the massive hit count they bring.  8 per base in the open, nearly twice that of a chariot.

But yes, they are expensive and i wouldnt use them in a small battle.
