Empire skirmishers and brigades
« on: November 24, 2014, 01:29:41 AM »
In 2013 christmas I though a lot about brigades for Empire armylist. Finally I did not play too much this year, and I couldn't practice my theory. Today looking pictures of those days I found I took some shots about the brigades , so I am sharing with you the configurations,

please tell me if you use to play with some of them and how is your experience.

Some configurations i think are worth, others don`t but I consider because they have some reminiscence with historic formations.

Here we go: First my Empire army in Decembre 2013

Then an aerial shot of the possible brigades

Here we come with cavalry, the question is: Any good about those formations?

CAV Formation 1

CAV Formation 2

CAV Formation 3

Now infantry brigades (skirmishers are highlighted with blue lines)

INF formation 1

INF formation 2 (up) INF formation 3 (down)

INF formation 4 (correction 4 sk)

Thoughts? experience? improvements? historical correlation? utility? when to use them?

About Tercio formations, in my opinion is not for WM but it is a WMA topic: see http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=5057.0

Cav1 cand  cav3 both have irregular formations - so will be slowed down

Cav3 seems unnecessary- the stands have 360 degree Los so can just be in a line or column. Also it makes them weak if charged.

What are you trying to achieve with some of the formations? Some game advantage or something that looks good.

I rarely use clever brigades.

My only real suggestion is to have the skirmishers facing the wrong way - this gives you good LoS.

Yep cav 1 & is in irregular formation. Cav 3 could be in regular formation as it allow in cavalry some slight tilt, but you are exposing flanks so doesn't seems very interesting too.

What I tried to do is just question to the WM ruleset about how it works with renaissance formations. I am not trying to add rules or force to use those formations. I seek something that looks good more than advantage.

I am not trying to "discover" clever brigades but some renaissance flavour in the look of the army but inside the rules.

Looking backwards is very common, I do not use it because I do not like the "look", unless I need it in a specific turn (beware boys, harpies are near, Keep and eye in the sky !).

The point of this topic is just discuss and chat about empire army

I always pictured (still haven't painted my entire Empire army) skirmishers as looking backwards to keep opposing fliers from straying within 20 cm behind the unit.
