Milliput Vs Green Stuff
« on: February 20, 2013, 02:27:53 PM »
Starting to resurrect my Hive Fleet for BFG and am currently making my first Hive ship. I bought some milliput as they had no green stuff in stock and was wondering if either of the two has properties more desireable than the other?

Any tips on sculpting would be apprieciated :D

I wouldn't say that either of them is better or worse for sculpting.  They each have their own thing going on.  I generally use milliput for larger surfaces or for making a rounded structure, (EX: IN prows)  but I use green stuff for finer details since it's a more tactile material.  I would try and get my hands on both, use the milliput to make the general form of the ship and then add finer details with green stuff.
The Emperor may be master of the Galaxy, but a Captain is master of his ship!

Sorry I forgot to reply this. Lets talk a bit a bout putty :).

Miliput, I imagine you have bought miliput standard, witch is green, I hate that one, is quite rough, It smells really bad and is a little bit difficult to manipulate. I use that one to make skeletons and guts because is cheap.
Initial phase of mi hive ship, first tried to use miliput because is cheaper, but it just didn't result, specially if you are not very experience ;)

Green stuff, you should buy it to make the "skin" of your bioships, if you use miliput your result will not be as good.
Here is very cheap.

After that I started adding green and this is what you obtain with green.

But that are by far not the only alternatives you have.
Miliput red is not the only one miliput offers, miliput black and miliput grey are quite better, but also more expensive, and you can mix miliput with green obtaining putty with a mixture of both capacities.
Also when I start my ships I prefer to use even cheaper materials as balsa wood and aluminium paper , and puttys like paper mass and recently I have discover fimo.
is quite cheap and the results are quite organic, of course you can not use them for the surface unless you are an artist  :D.

squeleton of paper mass+aluminum paper.

squeleton of fimo and result of the second layer of green.

But there are quite more tipes of putty, for tyranid ships I don't think is worht it but If you are interested in other kind of modeling just ask me ;) I am welll documented :P

Ok, milliput skin is on! (silver-grey grade if you must know ;)) Just waiting for the green stuff to arrive, thanks to Harec for the heads up on that, didn't know you could get it other than from GW (yes, i'm that Naive :P). Would have posted a pic but it's come out distinctly phallic so I'll just skip the embarrassment.

Just needing some advice on tentacles. I'm fine with the  thicker ropey ones, rolling some copper wire in green stuff works well, but have come up short on the finer ones, like the ones on the wintermans models, what would be the best method for these?

Guitarstrings are to hard to be used as tentacles, in my opinion. But quite good if you whant in some textures.
Winterman tentacles are not that dificult, But need a bit of explanation. This afternoon if I have time I will do it.
Just for the moment. You dont need wire, actually I would recomendo you not using it on biger ones also. They end beeing to thick.
The trick with tentacles is time and practice. You first just do a simple rope. Then you do the tentacle. And then is a game of patience.
You have to wait until the surface of the tentacle is hard enought and then you can give it form.

The center conductor out of a coax cable is very strong and flexable and its plenty small, might be something to look into.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.
